Brian Keene
Brian Keene

SO WHAT ABOUT NSA?
At the World Horror Convention, held this year in San Francisco, my bud, Stoker winning Horror writer, Brian Keene, (NO REST FOR THE WICKED, THE RISING), known for his conservative leanings, asked me my opinion of this NSA spy stuff.

First off, I want to congratulate Brian on submitting to the Feo Amante look of shaved bald head, 'Stache & Goat w/glasses. There is no shame in going Feo, and his life has improved immeasurably since he started it!

Now then: Perhaps Brian was engaging in conversation, perhaps he was having fun and baiting me. I answered honestly, "What about it?"

After all, its not new as any search on the web will call up pages from 2005. I'm not understanding the outrage as if this is a NEW smear against Bush. I could understand it if it was being treated as the continuing mark against him, but that's not what is happening.

The Gift

HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAYS TO -
This birthday boy directed many of the most favorite episodes of THE X-FILES and has gone on to direct feature films. Happy Birthday to,
Director/Producer Rob Bowman (WEREWOLF [TV - 1987], DARK SHADOWS [TV - 1991], THE X-FILES [TV], REIGN OF FIRE, ELEKTRA, NIGHT STALKER [TV-2005]) who is 46.
Today's birthday boy has carved a career niche from a niche. Crime Dramas are a dime a dozen, but Chaz seems to have directed himself toward crime thrillers! It's the difference between watching a movie while laying on the couch or sitting on the edge of your seat. And if he can't find a script he likes, he writes one himself! So Happy Birthday to
Actor/Writer/Director Chaz Palminteri (INNOCENT BLOOD, THE USUAL SUSPECTS, JADE, DIABOLIQUE, SCAR CITY, MULHOLLAND FALLS, SCARRED CITY, EXCELLENT CADAVERS, ONE EYED KING, POOLHALL JUNKIES, RUNNING SCARED, PUSH) who is 54.
Chaz shares a May birthday with his INNOCENT BLOOD co-star, Anne Parillaud.
And on Sunday
Actor Cate Blanchett (THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY, THE GIFT, five minutes of silently staring straight into the camera spread over three installments of the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, HEAVEN, VERONICA GUERIN, THE MISSING, LITTLE FISH) is 37.
Actor Tim Roth (MURDER WITH MIRRORS, "THE COOK, THE THIEF, HIS WIFE, AND HER LOVER", RESERVOIR DOGS, PULP FICTION, PLANET OF THE APES [2001], KILLING EMMETT YOUNG, SILVER CITY, THE LAST SIGN, DARK WATER) is 44.
Producer/ Director Robert Zemekis (WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT?, DEATH BECOMES HER, TALES FROM THE CRYPT [TV], DEMON KNIGHT, THE FRIGHTENERS, BORDELLO OF BLOOD, WHAT LIES BENEATH, HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL, THIR13EN GHOSTS, RITUAL, GHOST SHIP, GOTHIKA, HOUSE OF WAX) is 54.
Robert shares a May birthday with his actor from GHOST SHIP, Gabriel Byrne.

Dead Daughters

DEAD DAUGHTERS COME ALIVE 2006
Russia (NIGHT WATCH), which just might become the next new world import for Horror movies the way Japan and Australia are now, will soon enter Cannes with a second dose of Horror from another Russian film maker.

Russian Director & Writer Pavel Ruminov brings the Horror Thriller film, DEAD DAUGHTERS, to the screen.

Once a mad mother drowned her three little daughters overnight.

Some years later, already in a mental hospital, she was herself murdered with three types of cold steel. Witnesses said that it was done by three teenage girls...

The ghosts of the dead daughters took vengeance on their mother, but neither was their thirst of revenge quenched, nor did their hatred dispel.

A deadly chain reaction began: They have great power. And this power is growing. They cannot rest in peace.

Maybe they’re not just ghosts. They are...

VAL GUEST MOVES ON
There was a time when director Val Guest and Alfred Hitchcock were names synonymous with good Horror and Thriller movies. Then in one deciding year, 1960, Alfred Hitchcock pulled ahead with his movie PSYCHO, while Val released his first bad movie EXPRESSO BONGO. Hitchcock then compounded his success, following up with THE BIRDS in 1961. Val Guest released two good films that year, STOP ME BEFORE I KILL and THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE. Both were good films, but they were swamped by THE BIRDS. That and the titles probably seemed a little too breathless.

Val's catalogue is still full of excellent entertainment, from the first CAT PEOPLE to his QUATERMASS films. Val left us at the age of 94.

At least, according to them. This is welcome news to many free people in the world, and a major disappointment to other free people in the world who love it when the tyrants win.

Are zombies welcome in Haiti? According to a blog report by Kevin Sites: No they are not! Especially those zombies who drink right out of the milk carton instead of pouring it into a container. No respect for the people who live around them - That's the zombie's first problem. That and cannabalism - which actually ties right back into their first problem!

Wolf's Trap

From William D. Gagliani
GAG ON THIS

The Leisure edition of my novel, the Bram Stoker Award finalist WOLF'S TRAP, has just hit the streets. You can find it everywhere! Soon, our friends at Shocklines will have signed copies. And they'll have a little bonus, too. For a limited time, anyone who buys a copy of WOLF'S TRAP from Shocklines gets a free numbered chapbook containing a story from my Ghosts of the IRA series (borrowed from the SHADOWPLAYS ebook collection published by Ebooksonthe.net). What's even better about this is that the chapbook features a stunningly evocative Deena Warner cover painting! That's right, the talented artist has illustrated "Kneel at the Shrine" and the painting is so good it gives me chills (Shhh, anyone who buys a copy of WOLF'S TRAP from me at World Horror will also receive a free chapbook with the Deena Warner cover! If I run out, you'll get a rain check).

WOLF'S TRAP CONTEST!

In order to get you interested in WOLF'S TRAP, I'm starting a website contest that will run to the end of May. Between now and then, anyone who either,
a) subscribes to my Gag Order newsletter, or
b) writes me an email with LOST CHAPTER in the subject line, will have his or her name added to a special drawing for the following prizes: four signed copies of WOLF'S TRAP, each of which will be accompanied by a "Kneel at the Shrine" numbered chapbook and maybe something else, too. A grand prize winner will receive a signed photocopy of the galleys, a finished book, a chapbook, and a signed and illustrated cover flat. Go to williamdgagliani.com.

Why LOST CHAPTER? Well, if you've read WOLF'S TRAP, you may be interested in a section that was edited out of the original edition and did not make it back into the Leisure edition. It's called "The Death of ---" (well, why should I tell? Let's just say it's Martin up to more of his fun and games).

After May 31st, I'll make the chapter available as a download, but until then you can use it to win!

HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAY TO -
Anthony started in Horror, got older and turned toward Mysteries (even playing Sherlock Holmes). But even his dramas teeter on Horror and Thriller. I mean, there's just something a little off, a little disturbing, about the roles of today's birthday boy. How disturbing? Take, for example, his dramas: A WALK WITH LOVE AND DEATH, BLOOD OF THE LAMB, BLACK FLOWERS FOR THE BRIDE, VOYAGE OF THE DAMNED, SWEET KILLING. And those are just the dramas! So Happy Birthday to
Actor Anthony Higgens (TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA, VAMPIRE CIRCUS, FLAVIA THE HERETIC, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, THE COLD ROOM, YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES, SHERLOCK HOLMES RETURNS and more) who is 58 today.

THINGS TO DO AT THE WORLD HORROR CONVENTION 2006
If you plan to be at the World Horror Convention in San Francisco, one of the things you should do when you see me is say,
"Gimmie something ugly, Feo!"
If you say that WHILE I'm wearing my black head cover, I'll reach into my bag and present you with a surprise gift in the form of a DVD or maybe a book or possibly a beer!*. Some are even autographed (Well, except for the beer*. But I can autograph the beer* if you really need it)! Pretty sweet, eh? I'll also take your picture, which might be used on this website! But remember, it only works when I'm wearing my black head cover AND you say, "Gimmie something ugly, Feo!"

That way I'll know that you read this and you'll know that you have something good coming to ya!

Offer good while supplies last, duh!

*If you don't or can't drink beer, that's okay. I'll buy MYSELF a beer and toast you with it! How cool is that? Pretty damn cool, from my point of view!

HAPPY CINCO DE MAYO!
Cool! Wow! Cinco de Mayo! What's that mean?
May 5th.
Oh, um...
It has a rich history.
Yeah?
In 1862, a small Mexican Army of 4,000, led by Texas born General Ignacio Zaragosa - a Chicano - and his Colonel Porfirio Diaz, destroyed the much larger invading French Army and traitorous Mexican Army (a combined force of 8,000). The victory was short lived. Under another pretext, the French sent 30,000 troops the following year, installing a relative of the French governing family, Archduke Maximilian of Austria. Mexico asked for our help.

Mexico asked the United States for help?

This, in itself, was a minor miracle for the following reasons.

LET'S PLAY IMAGINE!
Imagine yourself as a parent (perhaps you are). Imagine that you have a very trusted caretaker, a Nanny perhaps, who has been caring for your children almost since their birth. While you and your spouse are at work, Nanny looks after your children.

Now imagine that one day you come home to find your 16 year old daughter has murdered your Nanny. And then a flood of revelations come out.

You discover that since the very beginning this Nanny:

Sold off your child's favorite things as punishment, because your daughter didn't win a state championship.

Punished her for scoring only 96% in an exam.

Forced her to stand naked in a corner - even at the age of 16 - whenever she disappointed the Nanny. And EVERYTHING disappointed the Nanny!

And the more you discover, the worse it gets. Her parents and her Nanny is all your daughter has ever known: of course she never told. And whether you knew it or not, you were part of it. Now, only in retrospect do you start to realize all of the warning signs that had been there all along.

Your daughter is arrested and jailed for stabbing her Nanny to death. The prosecutor wants and gets to try her as an adult - to send her to an adult prison.

What would you do?

START OF THE MONTH UPDATE
Okay, we're two days into May and this is what's happening.

According to Urchin 5.0, feoamante.com, for April, received over 94,000 Horror, Thriller, Mystery, and Suspense visitors world wide (you all, of course) who, in turn, visited over 243,000 pages. This month saw slightly fewer visitors with a higher number of pages visited. Go figure.

Here are the folks I wanted to be in the MySpace.com/FeoAmante friend's list for the month of March.

Chesya Burke

Chesya Burke is a published horror writer and even wrote a review that was published here (Richard Wright's CUCKOO). Her stories have appeared both in chapbook form (CHOCOLATE PARK) as well as anthologies (DARK DREAMS, SMALL BITES, and more). Chesya has been a friend long before either of us got a spot at MySpace. You can find her at MySpace.com/Chesya.

James Newman

James Newman is another Pre-MySpace friend. He is also another Horror writer, James Newman has been published in chapbook form (HOLY ROLLERS), books (THE WICKED, MIDNIGHT RAIN), and even wrote a few music reviews here (GODHEAD: 2000, THE CULT: Beyond Good and Evil). You can find James at MySpace.com/NewmanJames.

Don and Kevin McQueen invited me to be a guest on their talk show, Geek R@wk, and we've been hangin' ever since. A former U.S. soldier attached to the 1st CAV, Don is also the Los Angeles Instructor for Ishi Yama Ryu Battoujutsu (Japanese Swordsmanship), and a member of Bujinkan, Los Angeles (Togakure Ryu Ninpo). Check him out at MySpace.com/TheDonster.

Tim Sullivan

Tim Sullivan is a movie writer, director, and producer (DEADLY SPAWN, 2001 MANIACS, HOOD OF HORROR). I first met Tim during the filming of 2001 MANIACS in California. He was just a scant few hundred yards from where Rob Zombie was shooting THE DEVIL'S REJECTS. That's the movie making biz, gang. Visit Tim at MySpace.com/NewRebellion.

Michael Laimo

Michael Laimo is an award winning Horror writer (DREGS OF SOCIETY, ATMOSPHERE, DEEP IN THE DARKNESS, SLEEPWALKER, THE DEMONOLOGIST) who I've met at many a World Horror Convention. Michael applies himiself both to his writing as well as his publicity as few authors of his stature do - or will. Find him at MySpace/MichaelLaimo.

Maurice Broaddus

Maurice Broaddus is another Pre-MySpace bud. A Horror and Science Fiction writer whose works have appeared in various anthologies and magazines (SMALL BITES, WEIRD TALES). Maurice has also has a review here (Chesya Burke's CHOCOLATE PARK). Often mistaken for me, the difference is obvious: Broaddus is shorter and I'm white! Visit him at MySpace.com/MauriceBroaddus.

Kenneth J. Hall

Kenneth J. Hall cemented himself in cult film status by making movies like EVIL SPAWN and THE HALFWAY HOUSE. Kenneth J. Hall is a Horror movie writer, director, and producer, as well as being the Big Cheese over at Fright Film Factory. Kenneth's creature creations have graced films from BIOHAZARD to DOLLMAN VS. DEMONIC TOYS and wrote THE TOMB, TERROR NIGHT, and PUPPET MASTER. Often confused with me, the difference is obvious: Hall is older and I'm better looking! Visit him at MySpace.com/kennethjhall.

Carlton Mellick III

Carlton Mellick III and I have circled each other warily at Horror conventions for some time now. A Horror writer, Carlton and I had stories appear in editor Brian Knight's Random Acts of Weirdness. For that same anthology, Carlton also won a Best of Fantasy & Horror from Ellen Datlow while I got a mere "Honorable Mention". Grrr! Carlton is known for his colorfully titled books including SATAN BURGER and RAZOR WIRE PUBIC HAIR. Mellick and I are never mistaken for each other. Visit him at MySpace.com/CarltonMellick3.

Staci Layne Wilson is more than just the "Flick chick" she pretends to be. Don't let her pose fool you! She is also a dark fantasy writer in her own ... uh ... right! The author of such novels as DARK LULLABY and collections like HORRORS OF THE HOLY, Staci and I keep running into each other at various Horror events: which is why I've bought myself a personal airbag for the upcoming run in at the World Horror Convention. Visit her at MySpace.com/StaciWilson.

Monica J. O'Rourke

Monica J. O'Rourke is still another Pre-MySpace friend. In addition to being a writer in her own right with books like SUFFER THE FLESH and her anthologies like ROYAL ASPIRATIONS. Monica also wrote reviews for this site ranging from books (DREAMCATCHER) to movies (THE LOST). What's more, she was my editor on no less than 2 anthologies, DECADENCE ONE and DECADENCE TWO. Visit her at MySpace.com/DeadlyMojo.

Deena Warner

Deena Warner is someone I actually met through my bud, Matthew Warner, who didn't really become my bud until after I wrote a glowing review of his novel, THE ORGAN DONOR. Now that I think of it, nobody wants to be my bud when I write a scathing review of their work. Go figure! Deena designs both books (Matthew Warner's DEATH SENTENCES) and websites (Chesya Burke). Visit her at MySpace.com/DeenaWarner.

Teri Jacobs

Teri A. Jacobs is a Horror writer (THE VOID, SECRETS OF THE BONES) and someone with whom I've shared an anthology (DECADENCE ONE). I first met Teri in 1999 at my first World Horror Convention in Atlanta, Georgia. You know. I've met nearly every one in this list long before they became a Myspace friend. Kinda makes MySpace seems pretty worthless for my pursuits. Oh well. Visit her at MySpace.com/TeriJacobs.

Other people in the mix are those whom I've met, but have no photos of like
Megan Fatras - MySpace.com/MeganFatras,
Or I've never met but have heard of like
L. L. Soares - MySpace.com/LLSoares,
Or have met but they prefer to promote their work instead of themselves:
Cullen Bunn - MySpace.com/CullenBunn,
Jason Brannon - MySpace.com/DarkGraffiti,
There are also those who prefer to be MySpace friends through their work, rather than themselves, and that includes the following books: SATAN'S 3-RING CIRCUS OF HELL, which can be found at Myspace.com/Satans3RingCircusofHell, and
MySpace.com/BadAssHorror,

Also the following movies:
MySpace.com/DeadandGone,
MySpace.com/Abominable (you can also read my review of the movie ABOMINABLE), and
MySpace.com/WithYoumovie,

And the Following Music:
MySpace.com/SobMusic.

And that's it for this update. If my MyFriends list get's even bigger for May, I'll have to continue the damn thing elsewhere! perhaps at FeoAmante.Net.

Ray Harryhausen

From Scott Essman
RAY HARRYHAUSEN GETS LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

On the hallowed grounds of Universal Studios, birthplace to such genre epics as Lon Chaney’s PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, Boris Karloff’s FRANKENSTEIN and THE MUMMY, and Béla Lugosi’s DRACULA, among many others, stop-motion animation legend Ray Harryhausen (20 MILLION MILES TO EARTH, EARTH VS. THE FLYING SAUCERS) was awarded for lifetime achievement by a new honorary society of motion picture character designers called Cinerouge.

Harryhausen, who hails from Los Angeles but now lives in England, is on a book tour for his most recent of two new books, The Art of Ray Harryhausen. He made it to the storied Hitchcock Theater at Universal – just steps away from Stage 28 where Chaney shot Phantom – for a special screening of Paul Davids’ reverential genre documentary, The Sci Fi Boys, which features Harryhausen plus stalwart directors John Landis and Peter Jackson, effects gurus Rick Baker, Steve Johnson and Dennis Muren, and gaggles of noted fans and historians, chief among them Famous Monsters of Filmland's own arrested adolescent and resident editor, Forrest J. Ackerman, also in attendance for the April 30 gala.
Cinerouge

After the screening, Paul Davids presented Harryhausen with his award, ironically a bust with a Chaney’s Phantom likeness, created by sculptor Brent Armstrong. Davids commented, “How does one introduce the greatest craftsman in cinema to ever have lived?” Gracious as always, Harryhausen, now 86, humbly countered that he’s glad that his films “have had such a positive influence. Most fans know Harryhausen’s work from Jason and the Argonauts and the 1950s-1970s run of “Sinbad” films, but few know that he also piloted the animation in RKO’s Mighty Joe Young and worked into the early 1980s before retiring to Europe.

The Sci-Fi Boys, a DVD release now exclusive through Best Buy, will also screen this week at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City. Paul Davids is an LA-based filmmaker who also wrote and co-produced the 1994 UFO telefilm Roswell. The 80-minute film has been widely praised as an intricate and overdue account of the men who pioneered genre filmmaking and revolutionized the makeup, puppet, and visual effects that transformed those films. SCARECROW GODS
Horror writer Weston Ochse (SCARY REDNECKS w/David Whitman, NATURAL SELECTION, APPALACHIAN GALAPAGOS w/David Whitman) — whose first novel, Scarecrow Gods, was just nominated for a Bram Stoker Award—told SCI FI Wire that the book was very personal to him. "Danny, the young white [protagonist], lives in my old house, in my old neighborhood in Chattanooga, Tenn., and does the things I did," Ochse said in an interview.

The short concerns a traveling businessman who begins receiving phone calls from the dead in a luxury high rise hotel.

From F. Paul Wilson
IN THE PIPELINE

THE TERY had its start in 1971 as a novelette called "He Shall Be Jon." I expanded it to novella length for 1978 publication as “The Tery” in BINARY STARS #2. Unfortunately the accompanying Steve Fabian illustrations were muddy messes due to the printing process. I fleshed it out to novel length for the 1990 Baen version. Earlier this year I did extensive revisions. So here you have the definitive text in hardcover for the first time, with bright, crisp reproductions Fabian's art. Scheduled for 2006 publication from Overlook Connection Press.

In the mid 1990s I wrote the novel, VIRGIN, about the discovery of the Virgin Mary's body. As I did with vampire lore in MIDNIGHT MASS, I began with the premise that all the Catholic lore about Mary is true except for one thing: She wasn’t assumed body and soul into heaven; instead, her body was hidden away in Israel’s Negev Desert. The guardian of her remains gets careless over the millennia and, while he’s busy elsewhere, the body is discovered and spirited away. This sets in motion a chain of cataclysmic events that reverberates around the world. I had a ball with it, putting all my Catholic background (with extra input from my wife) into play. I sent it out under my wife's maiden name (Mary Elizabeth Murphy) and gave it a blurb under my own. Even dedicated it to myself: "To my husband, without whom this book would not have been possible." This is the first hardcover edition and the only publication under my own byline.

My lost novel, BLACK WIND, long out of print returns thanks to Borderlands Press. After finishing THE TOUCH in 1985, the next story in line returned to WW2, but this time to the Pacific Theater. I’d been reading a few books that recounted how nicely the Pearl Harbor attack played into Roosevelt’s desire to go to war against the Axis, hinting that Pearl had been set up. The result was a revisionist historical family saga horror war novel (try saying that fast 3 times) that took me almost two years to write and research. The mix of cultural fanaticism and wrenchingly dark supernatural horror got excellent reviews, but no one knew how to position the mongrel so it would sell. And so it didn’t. Thus its out-of-print status. Despite its poor sales record, I'm very proud of BLACK WIND. Looking at it in terms of character development and sweeping plot, it's probably my most accomplished work. I’m delighted it will be back in print.
