A FINE, DARK READING
Who else better to tell a coming-of-age story set in the late 1950s than Joe R. Lansdale? In January, Warner Books will be releasing A FINE DARK LINE, a book Kirkus reviews calls: "Funny, scary, heartwarming, heart-pounding, Tom Sawyer-ish, Huck Finn-ish, provocative, evocative, sometimes actually wise..."

REVOLUTION CONTINUES
Jayme Lynn Blaschke will be filling those big Texas boots of Rick Klaw's as Fiction Editor over at RevolutionSF. Blaschke is probably best known for his interviews of greats Harlan Ellison, Neil Gaiman, Jack Williamson, and Samuel R. Delany, though he is writer himself. His reign begins January 1, 2003, with this line up of authors slated for the first month of the year: David Prill, Winston Churchill (yeah, you read that right!), Don Webb, Lillian Stewart Carl, Ben Jeapes, and the great story master Gene Wolfe.

BILL GAG RACKS UP THE HONORABLE MENTIONS
Online and Print Horror reviewer William Gagliani (Chiaroscuro, Cemetery Dance) tells us that he is proud to find two of his stories, PORT OF CALL (EXTREMES 3: TERROR ON THE HIGH SEAS anthology, Lone Wolf Publications) and STARBIRD (THE MIDNIGHTERS CLUB anthology) have made the Honorable Mentions list of THE YEAR'S BEST FANTASY & HORROR (15th Edition, 2003), edited by Ellen Datlow & Terry Windling.

DEON SANDERS WRITES SOUTHERN HORROR!
No, not THAT Deon Sanders. This is Deon C. Sanders and he hails from Chicago, Il. He calls himself "The New Face of Horror" (I always imagined the "face of Horror" to be rather bony and covered with rotting flesh, but hey!: If that's your face, wear it proudly! WE GOT HORROR, RIGHT HERE IN RIVERSIDE CITY
And it's not the fun kind of chills up your spine, monsters in the dark Horror either. I'm talking about Horror among a posturing, posing, preening, liberal community, "Racists don't kill people, guns do" type of Horror in California. There are no doubt more movies to come out of California (made by white folks) - as well as finger pointing to the Southern states of the U.S. - regarding racism against dark skinned people.

But...

RANDOM ACTS OF WEIRDNESS HITS THE STREETS

It was first supposed to come out in April of 2002 at the World Horror Convention - but the publisher dropped it and a new one stepped in. Then it was supposed to be released in August at the Horrorfind convention - but there was a gross printing error. Then it was supposed to be released in September - make that October - er... anybody up for November?

Finally, FINALLY, Catalyst Press has proudly (if exhaustedly) announced the release of editor Brian Knight's RANDOM ACTS OF WEIRDNESS.

MAD MAX RIDES AGAIN
This can only be good news: George Miller, creator of the original MAD MAX and the only director to helm all three MAD MAX films (MAD MAX, MAD MAX: The Road Warrior, MAD MAX: Beyond Thunderdome) - and Mel Gibson (SIGNS), the only actor to ever play Mad Max in all three MAD MAX films, will be working together to make the 4th MAD MAX movie! WHY THE KID'S HIDE IS RAW
The micro-niche of Horror Westerns may be making a comeback (Tom Piccirilli's GRAVE MEN, John Findley's TexArcana), but that ain't keeping regular westerns from also making an appearance. According to Marvel comics editor-in-chief, Joe Quesada, 1950s comic book cowboy hero, THE RAWHIDE KID, is coming out of the closet. That's right: There's steers and queers in the old west and the Rawhide Kid ain't wearin' any horns by cracky!

MAYBE THE TOUR BUS BROKE AN AXLE
Lead singer of the original GUNS & ROSES, Axl Rose, has never been the most reliable person even in the most sober of times. GET YER EQUILIBRIUM
Its that time of year when Hollywood releases films that could usher in a Brave New World of filmaking. Movies that are so close, yet so out of step, from other original blockbuster films that have gone before (i.e. THE SIXTH SENSE, FRAILTY), that they could be really hot if only the studio had a clue on how to properly market it - but this movie had the poor misfortune to work with Dimension Films. EDO VON BELKOM AND HIS WICKED IDEAS
As a Horror writer, Edo von Belkom is getting some wicked ideas. I mean, its one thing to be a prolific short story writer and its quite another to be a prolific novelist. Toss in a prolific editor and I don't know any one else who can do all that and still maintain the high quality we've come to expect from Belkom. I mean, last year's TEETH garnered Edo the "One of the best horror novels of 2001 by SF CHRONICLE magazine." The guy is both a Bram Stoker award winner and an Aurora winner for his writing and editing (he has 20 published books and 20 published short stories) and has got rave reviews from no less than Peter Straub, Rue Morgue magazine, Fangoria magazine, this website, and even Stanley "The Dark Dreamer" Wiater!

Now they all have their mugs on video and that money grubbing huckster, Jerry Lentz, is offering its release for a ransom.

This is the complete appearance - live and uncensored mayhem! Some violence, adult language, and graphic sex makes The 4X4 Home Video Too Hot For Tee Vee! Well, not the sex part. Among the topics discussed are 4X4, their various solo books, the HWA, fans, groupies, Feo Amante, and writing in general.

THE HORRORS OF CELL PHONES
Or why Qwest will bend over backwards to rob you blind.
I've had a few emails on this one subject, and while this site is hardly a "consumer affairs" place, this issue (and perhaps because I purchased a new Sprint cellphone system myself just yesterday: a simple procedure which became more byzantine with every passing minute!) is going to be addressed by a single link to the State of Arizona's Attorney General. Read Arizona Hang's Up On Qwest.

BRIAN HOPKINS AND THE TRIPLE BANG
First, this Saturday, January 12, 2002, Creature Feature presents an audio interview with the Oklahoma City writer. Judy Comeau, better known as the Tombkeeper, managed to corner bah in the bar last fall when he was a guest at HorrorFind, and stuck a tape recorder in his face. It's done in Real Audio, so you'll need Real Player (free from Real Networks at real.com).

Remember the baseball game where the Others beat the Writers again? How about the Whores winning the Talent Contest? Or Phil Nutman in drag? Some crazy nightmare you had after consuming too much chili? Nope. Sweet memories of Camp NECon 2001! THE DEAD ZONE LIVES AGAIN

Gather 'round, kiddies. Stephen King's "The Dead Zone" will be definitely be a series on USA Cable this spring, starring Anthony Michael Hall. As in the novel (and the classic film) Hall's character is a likeable psychic who emerges from a long coma to find his former life in ruins. Of course, this time around he doesn't die. At least not in the first season, anyway.

MCCAMMON RETURNS!
Retirement's over! Robert McCammon will return (YES! YES! YES! -feo) as an author this fall with a new book, SPEAKS THE NIGHTBIRD. Though information is incomplete, it appears the Alabama native has chosen the Montgomery's River City Publishing to print this first novel since his self-imposed retirement in 1999. And even though they don't have a price to quote you, Amazon.com is already accepting orders, noting customers will have to approve the price before books are shipped.

LETS GET DECADENT
Hey all you burgeoning writers out there, our own Monica O'Rourke is editing a trilogy of anthologies, the first of which, DECADENCE is scheduled to be released in 2002 by Prime Books. The first book has been completed and will feature such writers as
Nancy Kilpatrick,
Edo van Belkom,
Charlee Jacob,
Gene OíNeill, and
Feo Amante
will be available in the next couple of months.

For future volumes of Decadence, Monica is looking for cutting edge erotic horror stories. The erotica can be subtle, or over-the-top, or anywhere in-between, but the stories must be horrific. No science fiction. Fantasy, as long as itís dark - no sword and sorcery, or gnomes, or creatures of that ilk.
