BioShock
GORE VERBINSKI TO DIRECT 'BIOSHOCK'
Universal bringing videogame to bigscreen

FeoNote: While movies from games have been going on for sometime - with disastrous results - the original games have rarely been as cinematic as HALO (the deal fell apart, but ah... such promise!) or the upcoming BIOSHOCK. BIOSHOCK is such an amazing game that its beautiful just to watch someone else play it, observing the game unfold cinematically. Who knows? There may come a day when people will pay to watch a master gamer play a game, and even pay again to watch a different player unveil the story. The Gamer becomes a variant of the Orchestral Conductor: Gaming nuanced as music. Until that possible future happens, we have directors taking us down the path. But unlike the offal from directors like Uwe Bolls (ALONE IN THE DARK) and the ever-so-slightly better performing video game movies of Paul W. Anderson (RESIDENT EVIL), BIOSHOCK is getting the royal treatment from no less than fan favorite, Gore Verbinski (THE RING [USA], PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN).

What Gore brings to the table is his own cinematic judgement. Unlike the disaster that was DOOM, I don't think Gore would allow writers who have no love for the game to pen the script. At least that's what I'm hoping. Right now they're in talks with John Logan. John has proven himself with movies like BATS, STAR TREK: NEMESIS, and SWEENEY TODD. That's two strikes and a bunt there (bunt because the Sweeney Todd stage play, the musical, and the adaptation of the musical were written by others) so keep a tight reign there, Gore.

John Landis
From Joe Moe
NOT THE HORROR BUT THE THRILLER

RED VELVET co-writer/producer Joe Moe recently caught up with his pal JOHN LANDIS (AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, INNOCENT BLOOD, DEER WOMAN) and has the following to report: On April 24th, 2008 - there was a THRILLER 25th ANNIVERSARY screening (THE MAKING OF THRILLER screened too). Over 8,000 people showed up for the festivities!

Recently you may recall a hilarious YouTube video of a mass performance of the THRILLER choreography by hundreds of orange-suited Filipino prison inmates (and one transvestite victim). Landis is quoted on MSNBC's TodayShow.com commenting on the notorious video: "The Filipino prison is wonderfully crazy. But people all over the world perform the ‘Thriller’ dance at weddings, at quinceaneros, at funerals, at bar mitzvahs. It blows me away."

On Tuesday, April 29th GIULIA D'AGNOLO and John Landis appeared together at DARK DELICACIES BOOK STORE in Burbank, California where they met fans and signed over 100 copies of Giulia's new Landis biography titled simply: JOHN LANDIS. The book is a fascinating and detailed look into the mind and legacy of Landis. Full of pictures, history and anecdotes, FORREST J ACKERMAN wrote a lovely, sentimental intro in the book as well. In other news, John Landis is currently directing IN SICKNESS AND IN HEALTH (written by VICTOR SALVA [JEEPERS CREEPERS]) for the new NBC TV horror anthology series FEAR ITSELF.

HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAY TO -
Anthony started in Horror, got older and turned toward Mysteries (even playing Sherlock Holmes). But even his dramas teeter on Horror and Thriller. I mean, there's just something a little off, a little disturbing, about the roles of today's birthday boy. How disturbing? Take, for example, his dramas: A WALK WITH LOVE AND DEATH, BLOOD OF THE LAMB, BLACK FLOWERS FOR THE BRIDE, VOYAGE OF THE DAMNED, SWEET KILLING. And those are just the dramas! So Happy Birthday to
Actor Anthony Higgens (TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA, VAMPIRE CIRCUS, FLAVIA THE HERETIC, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, THE COLD ROOM, YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES, SHERLOCK HOLMES RETURNS and more) who is 60 today.

30 Days of Night
From Joe Monks
MEDORS BATTLE

MIAMI, FL: When word got out that Runes of Ragnan/Willow Creek/ 30 Days of Night artist Josh Medors was battling cancer, it didn't take long for a lengthy list of comic industry heavyweights to join forces to help out. A massive charity auction has been organized by Image Comics and Frazetta Comics Editor/artist Jay Fotos.

"Josh is a good friend, father and artist. With the support from the comic industry that he loves so dearly, we can all help with costly medical bills and ease his pain just a little," said Fotos.

Among the star-studded list of donors whose work will be available are Frank Frazetta himself, Jerry Beck, Brian Haberlin, Mark Kidwell, Todd McFarlane, Nat Jones, Steve Niles, Ben Templesmith, Andrew Mangum, Jerry Ordway and dozens of others.

Walker
For the auction, comics writer-turned-director Joe Monks has teamed with artist Shane Smith on a one-of-a-kind item; a piece of production art from the upcoming screen adaptation of Monks' story 'WALKERS (originally published in the ROADKILLS chap book in 2003 and now being adapted to comics by Smith).

The production art is accompanied by a text piece, which tells part of the 'WALKERS story, in which a family of Americans and a lifelong friend cross paths with an ex-mercenary and a roving band of thugs on the wrong side of the Mexican border while trying to outrun a zombie plague. 'WALKERS is expected to go into production near year's-end.

If you are unable to attend the auction, PayPal donations can be made to Josh directly: jmedors1@insight.rr.com

The Josh Medors Benefit Auction will take place Saturday, May 10th at the Emerald City Comic Con, being held at the Washington State Convention & Trade Center in Seattle, WA.

Silent bids on pieces on display at the Con's official site can be sent to: medorsauction@emeraldcitycomicon.com

Terminator
THE NEW TERMINATOR WILL BE KID FRIENDLY
Look for the next TERMINATOR to be cute and cuddly. Not so much a death machine as a "Bad Robot". A robot with an attitude, if you will. At least according to Victor Kubicek, Broker turned writer and co-founder and co-CEO of Halcyon: the company that currently owns the TERMINATOR franchise for theatrical release. Victor hasn't gone on record as saying that his vision is superior to James Cameron and William Wisher. After all, he's in total remake land. And in the world of Hollywood remakes of an already successful franchise, that's a parasite paradise where folks try to make a quick buck off of audiences who are bamboozled into thinking that they are going to get a worthy successor to the originals that they loved. But as the still births of ALIEN 3, ALIEN: RESURRECTION, and the barely breathing TERMINATOR 3 showed, the people behind these parasite franchise owning McGompanies are hopelessly flaccid where sequels are concerned.

Hey! Don't get mad! I could be wrong! Just look at the wonderful line-up of people behind the upcoming, re-imagined TERMINATOR movie!

Derek Anderson - Another co-founder and Co-CEO of Halcyon, Derek (ex of the In The Mix advertising agency), admits its all about the marketing. Halcyon cut a deal with Playmate toys, so expect a plush Terminator in the future. When Derek talks about the upcoming TERMINATOR SALVATION: THE FUTURE BEGINS movie, he feels that the new Terminator movie MUST impress two very important things on you.
1. "Our merchandising program will be the largest to date for 'The Terminator,'"
2. Halcyon launched Halcyon Games to release a Terminator game in time for the release of the movie.

The Executive Producer for TS:TFB is Moritz Borman. What does he know about this genre of film making? Why he is only the mastermind behind such stunning box office smash hits like THE CROW III: SALVATION, TERMINATOR 3, and MINDHUNTERS. When he isn't making movies in our genres, he's producing other mega smash hits like Under the Volcano, Homer and Eddie, Nurse Betty, The Wedding Planner, Blow Dry, K-19: The Widowmaker, National Security, Welcome to Mooseport, and Basic Instinct 2. He also threw his weight behind Suspect Zero. I'm sure if you work things just so, you can make anything profitable in the world film market. Honestly, I have no idea what Martin will bring to the table. Considering that his entire catalog sells in the Walmart two for ten bin, it won't be audience appreciation of his work.

Next up is Jeffrey Silver. Cool that Jeffrey got to be one of the 16 producers of 300. But the rest of his track record in our genres includes, GOSSIP, MINDHUNTERS, and THE RETURN. Silver knows cute and cuddly though. His big hits are The Wonder Years (TV) and The Santa Clause movies with Tim Allen. So Jeffrey really knows how to bring the cute and cuddly factor to the next TERMINATOR movie. And since an actor for Terminator hasn't actually been signed yet, who knows? Maybe Tim Allen wants to be the metal alloy killer robot with a heart of gold! And Kubicek, Anderson, Borman, and Silver can impress these ideas on their writing team of John D. Brancato and Michael Ferris (MINDWARP, WATCHERS II, THE UNBORN, TERMINATOR 3, CATWOMAN, PRIMEVAL). And just to give it that extra bit of spit-shine, Paul Haggis will polish the script! Haggis hasn't actually done any work in our genres, but he did write for The Richie Rich/Scooby-Doo Show, The Plastic Man/Comedy Adventure Show, The Heathcliff and Marmaduke Show, episodes of Diff'rent Strokes, Facts of Life, and Who's The Boss! What's more, from 2004 to 2007, Paul wrote four of the "Politically Conscious Hollywood" movies that made preachy political diatribe movies the cash cow they are today! Theaters and audiences are beging for more, which is why the Academy dutifully hands out Oscars to such worthies. Also, Haggis was part of Walker Texas Ranger and Million Dollar Baby. Neither were in our genres but Walker was VERY family friendly!

Finally, here is the absolute cherry to the upcoming TERMINATOR movie. For those of you who already know, don't spoil for it for the newbies: Guess who is directing the upcoming TERMINATOR movie? Are you ready? McG! That's right! McG of the Charlie's Angel movies and We Are Marshall: the guy who produced the primetime soaps, The O.C., The Mountain, and Supernatural (well, at least Supernatural is finally getting Horrific!), as well as The Pussycat Dolls: The Search for the Next Doll - that guy - he's going to produce and direct the next Family Friendly TERMINATOR! And he's going to do that while simultaneously re-creating a TV Show, Spaced, that was originally created by Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg, Jessica Hynes, and Nick Frost (SHAUN OF THE DEAD) for their old UK TV series, Spaced.

HOO BOY! I sure as shit can't wait to see the all new re-imagined, Playmate Toys approved, Boritz and Silver produced, Paul Haggis polished, McG directed, TERMINATOR movie! Can you?

BLU-RAY -

These are the movies -

ABOMINABLE - gets a new cover and a new release. Please read my review.

BLOODSUCKING BABES FROM BURBANK - Seriously, with a title like that you're expecting THE EXORCIST?

BRAVESTARR: THE MOVIE - An animated movie from 1986. A space-boppin' poppa of a Shaman, with mystical powers (what's the point of being a Shaman without mystical powers?) yoinks a kid onto his spaceship - which is okay in this case because the boy's planet gets destroyed by a really evil varmint named Stampede. The planet was full of peace-loving people, so they were sitting ducks. Turns out the boy was prophesied to be a savior with special powers (by whom? All of the dead people from his planet? Some savior!). Bravestarr has four special powers that, while they sound pretty cool, ain't gonna save your planet from destruction. So the Shaman goes and crashes his spaceship on Stampede's home turf, called - ahem - New Texas. On Planet bustin' Stampede's home planet, Bravestarr grows to become a super Marshall (?). So Bravestarr's new mission is to protect the people of New Texas from the further hijinks of Stampede.

THE CAR - Please read my review.

DEVIL TIMES FIVE - Criminally insane kids infiltrate a wealthy man's house, with cold blooded murder on their little minds. This is from 1974 so guess who the presumptive bad people are?

THE FOREST - The good thing about this 1983 Campers-terrorized-in-the-woods-by-a-cannibal flick, is that it tries to be more than just a Campers-terrorized-in-the-woods-by-a-cannibal flick.

FRIGHTWORLD - I was called upon a few times to create a book cover design using Mike BoHatch's cover art as the frontispiece (DECADENCE TWO). Now the guy went and made a movie!

GRIZZLY RAGE - It's about one mad bear. It's also from Dimension Extreme, so there's that.

IT CAME FROM THE LAKE - From 1978. Worst DVD Cover Ever! Monster from the lake gets on dry land and starts eating people. This was originally called MONSTROID, which sounds a whole lot better. The original poster was far cooler too! Stars John Carradine (SHOCKWAVES, THE HOWLING)

KILL THE SCREAM QUEEN - Girls respond to ads for newbie movie starletts, but the movie is really a snuff film.

MERCY - This week's weird would be the 2006 tale of a man released from prison after 25 years. A formerly violent criminal, John returns to the outside to find that the whole world has become vioent and unpredictable. From his nutso parole officer to his whacked out landlord and more, this is not the world of normalcy that John left, but one that he and people like him created.

MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000: THE MOVIE - Two movies running at the same time. On the surface it's MST3K, and the movie they are lampooning is THIS ISLAND EARTH. MST3K gets its re-release, that's all. Nothing special has been done with this one, but as before, both the spoof and the unspoofed movie are on this disc.

SERIAL MOM - From 1994 comes this Collector's Edition of a serial killing Mom saving her brood... but who is she saving them for?

TEETH - Two words: Vagina Dentata. Look it up and you have the plot for this movie.

TO BECOME ONE - Murderous mad scientist in this 2002 flick at least has a truly mad and possibly murderous idea.

ZOMBIES ANONYMOUS - A brave attempt to take a Horror trope and get Japanese Horror weird with it. I'd check it out just for the effort!

Obituary Anthology
From Joe Monks
HART FISHER'S EVIL WAYS

Los Angeles, CA: For their first music video in three years, Florida death metal legends and international superstars OBITUARY turned to outlaw comic book publisher and horror filmmaker Hart D. Fisher (FLOWERS ON THE RAZOR WIRE, THE BUNKER) to direct the band's latest, "Evil Ways," from their most recent release, Xecutioner's Return.

Shortly before embarking on their European tour, the members gathered at Dan's Three Corners Bar, a 70-year-old establishment in Gibsonton, Florida, where the music vid was lensed.

Shortly before embarking on their European tour, the members gathered at Dan's Three Corners Bar, a 70-year-old establishment in Gibsonton, Florida, where the music vid was lensed.

"We wanted a video that fit what the band is really like and in a location where you might find us having a cool one on any given day," singer John Tardy told MTV's Headbangers Ball Blog. "I think the locals and regulars probably thought we were out of our minds, but Dan, the owner, was so cool it didn't seem to faze him. He actually let us in and left us alone in the bar by ourselves to film."

"I loved working with these guys, the shoot was a lot of fun." said director Hart D. Fisher. "Everyone pitched in and did whatever job needed to be done, the ideas were flying, no ego's, no attitudes, we just ground it out."

After shooting for "Evil Ways" was completed, Obituary discovered that Dan's Bar, which has existed since 1936, is soon to be no more. "It's set to be torn down and the land re-developed," Tardy said. "We did not know this at the time of filming, so it is nice that it will be forever remembered in this video."

Obituary is currently in the middle of an international tour and will embark on a U.S. tour in the fall.
The video is online and can be viewed at MTV Headbangers Blog.

Check out Director Hart Fisher's online journal about the shoot at BoneDaddy777.livejournal.com.

DEL HOWISON
GIANT COMPOSERS SINGING AT DARK DELICACIES
FeoNote: If you plan to be in the Los Angeles area on Saturday, May 10, you may want to know about the following -

Del Howison (DARK DELICACIES Anthology) is renown for putting on very special, select events at his store, Dark Delicacies in Burbank CA. Well Del just sent me an email announcing his most remarkable event yet! On Saturday, May 10, at 2:00pm, Giant Composers will be Singing at his store!

Del has brought together what must be the tallest composers in Hollywood, and they're all coming together to sing at his bookstore! He didn't mention if the composers will be singing as a choir or individually, but the roster is amazing!

Christophe Beck (BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER [TV], ANGEL [TV], WOLF GIRL)
Marco Beltrami (SCREAM [all], THE FACULTY, DRACULA 2000, RESIDENT EVIL, BLADE II, TERMINATOR 3, HELLBOY, I, ROBOT, RED EYE, UNDERWORLD: EVOLUTION, THE OMEN [2006])
Mychael Danna (8MM),
John Debney (THE RELIC, END OF DAYS, THE SCORPION KING, SIN CITY, CHICKEN LITTLE),
Michael Giacchino (THE INCREDIBLES),
Mark Isham (THE HITCHER, BLADE, IMPOSTOR, NEXT, THE MIST),
Brian Tyler (FRAILTY, BUG, ALIEN VS. PREDATOR: REQUIEM),
Joel McNeely (VIRUS),
Lalo Schifrin (THX 1138, THE AMITYVILLE HORROR, AMITYVILLE II: THE POSSESSION, ABOMINABLE),
John Ottman (APT PUPIL, EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS, X2, GOTHIKA, THE INVASION),
Charles Bernstein (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET),
Don Davis (THE MATRIX [ALL], HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL [1999]),
Christopher Young (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 2, HELLRAISER, HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER II, SPECIES, URBAN LEGEND, THE GIFT, THE CORE, THE EXORCISM OF EMILY ROSE, SPIDER-MAN 3)
and more! I don't know how Del plans to fit all of these giants into his tiny store, but if anyone can pull it off, Del can!

This is an event NOT to be missed! Singing Giants! AND they're all movie composers! Damn!

Dark Delicacies is located at
4213 West Burbank Blvd,
Burbank, CA
