New Moon
YOU DUG IT
It can't be denied. TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON, is a smash hit. You dug it by making it #1 two weeks in a row. And this was a very powerful #1. While the fall from last weeks' third largest box office opening was a huge 70%, the weekend take is still $42 million plus, impressive by most standards. This gave it a screen average of over $10,000 per and promises to make Stephanie Meyer one of the hottest Horror Thriller writers of the coming decade - even is she IS only using Horror Thriller icons to write teen romance novels.

At 10 and rising fast, is THE ROAD. This apocalyptic tale was difficult for audiences to find, being on only 111 screens. All the same, THE ROAD brought in more money per screen than any other movie in the top ten.

YOU BURIED IT
2012 stays stationary at #3 this weekend, but still dropped 31.8% from it's weekend take last week. Even after three weeks and a budget four times the size of NEW MOON, 2012 has come nowhere close to Meyer's opening weekend total.

You also buried PLANET 51. The movie has the absolute best 3D cartoon animation I've ever seen, the story is worthwhile, but the direction and the dialogue are pukeworthy. You must agree, as PLANET 51 falls from it's opening at 4 last week to #7.

Top 20 Unfortunate Lessons Girls Learn From ‘Twilight’
From a male point of view, the only redeeming feature of the Twilight books and movies is the ammunition they provide against female claims of innate moral superiority over men.

Whenever a woman criticizes a man’s lust, aggression, shallowness or any other lesser angel of his personality, the quick-witted fellow can point to the millions of women addicted to the base, insipid, bad-boy-worshiping, misogynist syrup so many female viewers of all ages knelt to this past weekend, when The Twilight Saga: New Moon raked in $147 million at the box office, setting several records.

Look out! The robots are coming to take your job away
For as long as anyone can remember, the Tokyo International Robot Exhibition has been a showcase for Japan at its wackiest: stern industrial machines lurked backstage as waltzing, noodle-making or ping-pong playing humanoids stole the limelight.

In recessionary 2009, however, with Japanese industry writhing in pain, the national robot obsession has turned deadly serious. For the first time, the show explains exactly how the machines are going to take over.

'Precious’ shines a light on the soul-destroying horror of parental abuse
The most gut-wrenching moment in Precious: Based on the Novel Push By Sapphire, is when the abused teenager of the title explains that she doesn’t want to be loved. In her 16-years of hell on earth, the people who provided her with “love” were the father who had sexually abused her, and the mother who is seething with jealousy over the fact that her daughter has taken away her man.

Trying to wrap your head around the mindset of a mother who sees her abused child as a rival is much more horrifying and graphic than a dozen bloodletting horror films. This is real horror, about a child whose whole life has been about losing her soul, her will to live, her hopes and aspirations, as they slowly leak out of her from the constant onslaught of parental “love.”

ROB ZOMBIE Wants To Break Out Of Horror With Next Movie
According to The Pulse of Radio, Rob Zombie told the Chicago Tribune on Tuesday (November 24) that he wants his next film as a writer/director to be outside the horror genre. Zombie, who has made four horror movies since 2003, said, "If you go down that road too far, it's hard to break out of it. I don't want to get stuck with anything. I want the freedom to do what I want to do." Zombie's last film, "Halloween II", was released in late August to mostly horrible reviews and lukewarm box office.

Greg Lamberson
From Melinda J. Schumacher
NO SLIME ON HIM!
2010 BIFF HONORARY CHAIR CALLS BELOIT INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL "THE BEST FESTIVAL I HAVE ATTENDED"
Gregory Lamberson, internationally celebrated creator of horror films, will add a special twist and a welcome scream to the 2010 Beloit International Film Festival when he returns to Beloit as the honorary chair of the fifth annual BIFF, Feb. 18-21, 2010. Creator of the horror cult classic SLIME CITY, which marked its 20th anniversary at BIFF in 2008, Lamberson will be on hand for the world debut of the recently completed sequel, Slime City Massacre.

In a letter accepting the invitation to help promote the 2010 Festival, Lamberson noted that "I'd like to thank BIFF's organizers for inviting me to share in this experience, and all of the volunteers who work so hard to make this event a success. It's my pleasure to welcome filmmakers and attendees to the Fifth Annual Beloit International Film Festival, and a true honor to have been selected as this year's honorary Chair.

"Film festivals offer a unique opportunity for people of all stripes to celebrate the universal medium of film, and to see many works of varying lengths, genres and tones from around the world in a friendly, communal environment. This may be your only chance to see many of these films and to engage the artists who created them."

The internationally known filmmaker attended BIFF in 2008 where he conceived of the sequel and engaged other filmmakers in the project. He was struck by the "outpouring of support from the Beloit community and the appreciation it fostered among the visiting filmmakers. It was, quite honestly, the best festival I have attended."

The original Slime City premiered in 1988 and has played as a midnight movie in New York City for decades. It has been released on VHS and DVD four times in the U.S. and licensed around the world. Whereas Slime City was strictly a low budget, "grindhouse" styled tale about demonic possession in an apartment building, Lamberson had loftier ambitions for its sequel.

"Slime City Massacre is a celebration of 1970s science fiction films, gooey 1980s horror films, and 1990s action films, held together by a sense of the world that could only exist in this decade. My goal was to make a fun film with a serious subtext and a lot of surprises."

Lamberson will be on hand at the launch party and at all the major events to welcome film lovers. Joining him will be members of the cast and production team. Some of those anticipated to be on hand are newcomer Jennifer Bihl and horror author Kealan Patrick Burke, as well as cult actors Debbie Rochon (who has starred in over 170 feature films), Lee Perkins, and scream queen Brooke Lewis. The film also reunites Robert Sabin and Mary Bogle, stars of the original film, and features appearances by Roy Frumkes, who wrote and produced the cult classic Street Trash and Troma Entertainment founder Lloyd Kaufman

Beloit's Robert Tomaro, who composed the score for the original Slime City and appears in the sequel, will be on hand to discuss his experiences.

"Greg Lamberson has a huge international following," commented BIFF Executive Director Rod Beaudoin. "As honorary chair, he follows in some major international footsteps of previous honorary chairs including filmmaker and jewelry designer Robert Lee Morris and producer and director Steve McEveety. We know Greg will attract audiences and add excitement to the Festival."

Prior to Slime City Massacre, Lamberson wrote and directed three cult horror films: Slime City, Undying Love, and Naked Fear; all three of them were re-released on DVD in 2009 as Greg Lamberson's Slime City Grindhouse Collection. Lamberson is also the author of two award-winning novels, Johnny Gruesome and Personal Demons, and one instructional filmmaking book: CHEAP SCARES! Low Budget Horror Filmmakers Share Their Secrets. His website is SlimeGuy.com.

New Moon
YOU DUG IT
And how! THE TWILIGHT SAGA: NEW MOON opened up to an incredible record setting $142 million dollar weekend! This opening weekend figure, which blows away the original's weekend B.O., is wholley based on the good audience will generated by the first TWILIGHT. The first, on a $37 million budget, generated $191 in U.S. sales alone, then went on to over $167 million in DVD sales in the U.S. (it's this kind of thing which gives thousands of poverty stricken literary authors hope.) Second weekend take will tell if you loved it, but more than any other romance or Horror Thriller this year, you were eagerly looking forward to NEW MOON.

Coming in at #4, you may have also dug PLANET 51. A spoof on 50s scifi Horror Thrillers with the roles reversed where WE are the alien invaders and have to contend with 50s, 60s era suburbs and pets that look like Giger's Alien but are just so CUTE!

YOU BURIED IT
Dropping in only one week to over -59%, to a staggering 3rd place, you aren't digging 2012. The disaster thriller has a long way to go to reach its break-even point of $400 million, and at only $108 million box office, things are looking KING KONG 2005 bad for 2012.
Never a hot performer, THE FOURTH KIND continues to slowly drip down the top ten charts to #9 in its third week.

HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAYS TO -
Of his 8 movies to date, 5 of them were Horror Thrillers, so let's give a big Happy Birthday to
Actor Oded Fehr (KILLER NET, THE MUMMY, THE MUMMY RETURNS, RESIDENT EVIL:APOCALYPSE, CHARMED [TV], RESIDENT EVIL: EXTINCTION) who is 39.
Look for Oded's upcoming Horror Thriller movie for 2009, HYBRID.
Our next birthday boy has made a career in that category that is one step below direct to video: direct to cable. Good luck finding a video, but you may catch him at 2 or 3 in the morning sometime on Cinemax or something.
Actor Maxwell Caulfield (THE SUPERNATURALS, MIND GAMES, PROJECT ALIEN, SUNDOWN: The Vampire In Retreat, DANCE WITH DEATH, WAXWORK II, ANIMAL INSTINCTS, MAXIMUM FORCE 2, ALIEN INTRUDER, THE PERFECT TENANT, FACING THE ENEMY, CRY OF THE WINGED SERPENT) is 49.
Actor Jamie Lee Curtis (HALLOWEEN, THE FOG, PROM NIGHT, TERROR TRAIN, ROADGAMES, HALLOWEEN II, BLUE STEEL, HOMEGROWN, HALLOWEEN H20, VIRUS, THE TAILOR OF PANAMA, HALLOWEEN: RESURRECTION) is 51.
And this birthday boy is well known to fans of Italian Horror - and how! The Internet Movie Database has many of his horror credits listed as "SciFi" but, come on! Nearly all of them are alien monsters coming to earth and butchering everybody! Get real! Science Fiction? HA! Isaac Asimov that ain't! So Happy Birthday to
Actor Franco Nero (I CRIMINALI DELLA GALASSIA, I DIAFANOIDI VENGONO DA MARTE, IL TERZO OCCHIO, LA MORTE VIENE DAL PIANETA AYTIN, GIORNATA NERA PER L'ARIETE, HITCH-HIKE, THE VISITOR, THE SALAMANDER, KAIMIKAZE 1989, THE GIRL, ALIEN TERMINATOR, DIE HARD 2, LA VOCE DEL SANGUE, MEGIDDO: The Omega Code 2, FUMATA BLANCA, DIE 8, BAD INCLINATION, BASTARDI, and I've gotta stop here because ol' Franco has made over 150 freaking movies!) who is 68 and still going strong. If you are one of those Horror fans whose tastes cross over into Westerns or Crime Dramas, Franco's other flicks won't leave you wanting. With 150+ films under his belt, the man has made crap and classics.
Writer Joe Eszterhas (JAGGED EDGE, BETRAYED, BASIC INSTINCT, SLIVER, JADE) is 65.

Within
From Hannelle Culpepper
TABLOID WITCH AWARD WINNER TO SCREEN AT LOSCON
The Tabloid Witch Awards announced that WITHIN won the Best Horror Film award. “Be careful who your friends are” is the tagline of this supernatural thriller about a nine year old girl, Rachel (Mia Ford), who has the gift (or curse) of being able to see the evil spirits that exist within others. When Rachel and her father move to a small town after the death of her mother, Rachel is befriended by Michelle. Rachel attempts to excuse herself from the friendship when Michelle’s seemingly innocent pranks become potentially deadly. But ultimately, Rachel’s visions solve a decades-old disappearance and save Michelle from the evil presence controlling her.

Mia Ford also won a Tabloid Witch Award for Best Child Actor. Brent Sexton, who plays the father of Michelle, won a Tabloid Witch Award for Best Supporting Actor.

WITHIN is the feature debut of African-American female director Hanelle M. Culpepper, a rarity in the horror world. It was shot in and around the Los Angeles area in a mere 20 days – an extremely fast shoot considering the leads were 9 years old. “They say never work with children and animals, yet I find myself constantly drawn to projects starring kids” says Culpepper who also directed the award-winning short “Six and the City,” a spoof of “Sex and the City” with six-year-olds .

“The amount of hours you have on set with kids is very limited, so every day we found ourselves pushing to make our day. It makes you more inventive which is always good for a director. But Mia and Sammi (Sammi Hanratty who plays Michelle) were both so wonderful to work with and delivered stellar work. It’s why I keep working with kids!”

To prepare for the film, Culpepper conducted extensive research including talking with a psychic who warned her of bad spirits being around the set. “We all know the Poltergeist curse, so it did freak me out a bit,” says Culpepper. Indeed the shoot was not without its issues – an actress broke her arm, the authorities withdrew a permit at the last minute, not to mention the usual challenges any low-budget shoot encounters. However, overall it was a fun set with pranks constantly being played by the actors and crew. The young leads were the ringleaders.

WITHIN has been well-received by festival audiences in both in Los Angeles and Strasbourg, France. At the Big Bear Horror Film Festival, it won Outstanding Feature Film. Both Mia Ford and Sammi Hanratty were nominated for Best Actress by the Strasbourg International Film Festival.

WITHIN will screen at the 36th Annual Loscon on Friday, November 27th at 6pm. The convention is being held at the LAX Marriott. Hanelle Culpepper, Mia Ford and Sammi Hanratty will be in attendance for a panel. The trailer for WITHIN can be seen at www.within-themovie.com. 'Halloween II' Arrives on DVD January 12, 2010
You can bring home Rob Zombie's latest horror film in DVD and Blu-ray early next year. "Halloween II" will be released on DVD and Blu-Ray on January 12, 2010 from The Weinstein Company. The standard DVD will be priced at $28.96 SRP and the Blu-ray will cost $38.96 SRP. The film did moderately successful at the box-office, but nowhere near as good as the first. Could this be because both movies totally sucked? Actually, the second was all that bad and considerably better than the first, but still, Rob Zombie needs to realize fast that filmmaking just isn't in his genes. Read on to see what features will be included on the DVD.

Paranormal Activity
YOU DUG IT
People can talk all they want about critical raves and pans, and "art". But what matters is what you, the audience decides.
This is what you decided this weekend.
2012 grabbed an impressive $65 million dollar first weekend, though not without controversy. Controversy, it should be noted, usually helps a film or book. We'll see how much audiences actually liked it, by next weekend.
After 2 long months, PARANORMAL ACTIVITY falls to #8 this week and may even hang on in the top ten for at least one more week.

YOU BURIED IT
THE FOURTH KIND fell from an "iffy" 4th place last week to 6th place this week. THE FOURTH KIND also has controversy (it isn't really based on a true story). Universal Pictures, included actual names of real publications to run their fictional "news", without first getting the permission of those publications. And so lost a lawsuit brought upon them. Lawsuits, unlike controversy, rarely help a film.

THE BOX dropped from 6th to 10th place and is a definite box office bomb. The poster, which largely features actor Cameron Diaz' face, amply demonstrates her inability to draw audiences based on name and face recognition. This is the second movie this year, with her face predominently on the poster, that flopped. To be fair though, the trailer for THE BOX was awful!

HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAYS TO -
Some child actors have no problem working straight on through to adulthood. Happy Birthday to
Actor Kimberly J. Brown (VAMPIRE PRINCESS MIYU, HALLOWEENTOWN [TV], HALLOWEENTOWN II: KALABAR'S REVENGE [TV], HALLOWEENTOWN HIGH [TV], BIG BAD WOLF) who is 25.
Actor Clu Gulager (MYSTERY IN DRACULA'S CASTLE [TV], RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, A NIGHTMARE ON ELMSTREET 2, THE OFFSPRING, THE HIDDEN, HUNTER'S BLOOD, UNINVITED, TEEN VAMP, THE WILLIES, THE KILLING DEVICE, THE PUPPET MASTER 5, FEAST [all]) who is 80.
