PINOCCHIO THE MOVIE: UPDATE

We are still waiting for the phone to ring with good news on Pinocchio. It has been frustrating waiting around for a response from the studios after such a momentous ramp up. It's like rallying up a mob of Vikings to raid a castle. We've sharpened our weapons and strapped on the armor. The night before we held a pep rally with beer, fight songs and head butts. We woke up early to consume a hearty breakfast and stretch. Then, as we charged for the entrance, we discovered the opposing team is out on a boat ride. So we plopped down on the grass to wait. The last I've heard, the two interested studios are the very two that I felt would be a perfect collaboration for the film. Either way, we win. Cross them bone.
Although the movie is not greenlit yet, it has made promising leaps over the past year. Produced by Guillermo Del Toro (THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE, HELLBOY, PAN'S LABYRINTH) and The Jim Henson Company, it received a development deal from French studio Pathe in the spring. That money was used to engage a development team of artists for three months throughout the summer to create the look of the film, along with a script and statues of the characters Pinocchio and Geppetto. Joining me in the Director's chair is animation veteran Mark Gustafson (Fantastic Mr. Fox, The PJs and Return to Oz). Nick Cave (SCREAM - all) and Warren Ellis (RED) will write the musical songs and compose the score. MacKinnon and Saunders (MARS ATTACKS!, Tim Burton's CORPSE BRIDE) will be doing puppet fabrication. Pathe has already expressed their enthusiasm for the film and has agreed to match an American studio for the total budget. In March, we took our demented adaptation of Pinocchio out and about Hollywood. We pitched to a handful of studios including Sony, Film District, Dreamworks, Legendary, MGM and Paramount. It has been a long seven years since the first time I sat down with Guillermo for lunch and told him my idea to turn Pinocchio into a stop motion feature film, but it has all been worth it. I'll keep you updated where it goes. |

At 3,955 theaters and more than that in screen count, THOR still thundered off with an impressive $16,688 ticket sale per screen average. We'll see if this impressive opening carries over to next week, but for now, you're digging the Thunder God.
You're still digging INSIDEOUS, which, in its 6th weekend, drops from #last week's #8 to this week's #11.
Also in its 6thh weekend, SOURCE CODE slides from #10 to this week's #12. I predict that both of these movies could see a bounce up the charts next week, as two of the weekend premiere's are Mother's Day chick flicks about weddings. And they opened at #3 and #4 respectively. Not bad, but not great or even good.

Mexico asked for our help.

PARANORMAN'S ACTIVITY
NEW YORK and PORTLAND, OR, May 4, 2011 – Focus Features and LAIKA, the two companies behind the Academy Award-nominated animated feature CORALINE are reteaming for LAIKA's next two projects. The first of the duo, ParaNorman, will be released nationwide on August 17th, 2012. The second, yet-to-be-named, picture will be released nationwide in 2014. Following the groundbreaking Coraline, ParaNormanis only the second stop-motion animated feature to be made in 3D. Focus CEO James Schamus and LAIKA President and CEO Travis Knight made the announcement today.
As on CORALINE, Focus will hold worldwide distribution rights to the movies, and Universal Pictures International will release them overseas. Coralineis Focus' second-highest-grossing movie of all time, with over $75 million domestically. The picture earned Golden Globe, BAFTA, Critics' Choice, and Academy Award nominations for Best Animated Feature Film; and was named one of the year's 10 Best Films by the American Film Institute (AFI) with an AFI Award.
Currently in production, ParaNormanis being directed by Sam Fell and Chris Butler, from Mr. Butler's original screenplay. Mr. Fell was director of The Tale of Despereaux and Flushed Away. Mr. Butler was storyboard supervisor on Coralineand storyboard artist on Tim Burton's Corpse Bride. The voice cast includes Academy Award nominee Casey Affleck (THE KILLER INSIDE ME), Tempestt Bledsoe (The Cosby Show), Jeff Garlin (ROBOCOP 3), John Goodman (C.H.U.D., BRINGING OUT THE DEAD, MONSTERS, INC.), Bernard Hill (THE SCORPION KING, THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS, GOTHIKA, THE LORD OF THE RINGS: RETURN OF THE KING), Academy Award nominee Anna Kendrick (THE TWILIGHT SAGA), Leslie Mann (Rio), Christopher Mintz-Plasse (KICK-ASS), Kodi Smit-McPhee (THE ROAD, LET ME IN), and Tony and Emmy Award winner Elaine Stritch (30 Rock).
In the comedy thriller, a small town comes under siege by zombies. Who can it call? Only misunderstood local boy Norman (voiced by Mr. McPhee), who is able to speak with the dead. In addition to the zombies, he'll have to take on ghosts, witches and, worst of all, moronic grown-ups, to save his town from a centuries-old curse. But this young ghoul whisperer may find his paranormal activities pushed to their otherworldly limits.
Arianne Sutner, animation producer on The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, and Travis Knight are producing ParaNorman. Academy Award winner Brian Van't Hul (THE LORD OF THE RINGS [all], I, ROBOT, KING KONG [2005], CORALINE) is the movie's visual effects supervisor; Emmy Award winner Nelson Lowry (Tim Burton's CORPSE BRIDE) is its production designer; and Tristan Oliver (the Academy Award-winning Wallace & Gromit in THE CURSE OF THE WERE-RABBIT) is the director of photography on ParaNorman.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City Coming Winter 2011
Resident Evil fans will be pleased to know that Capcom has announced their new project with SOCOM developer Slant Six. It's not gonna be Resident Evil 6, but sounds like the fans are gonna be happy. Their bringing back the zombies in this 1998 based multi-player which takes place during Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis and Capcom promises that fans will recognize some of the landmarks from their beloved classics. But this Resident Evil will have a much darker feel then it's predecessors.

He's one of the few who has made films on the horror of genre, and director Vikram Bhatt says he wants to continue doing so. Despite the fact that the genre doesn't do as well in the country, he has learnt to work his way around people's expectations .
Says Bhatt, "Horror is a niche genre because it's more or less about adult content, so that cuts off children. And then, everyone doesn't want to pay to get scared. However, horror always has a loyal audience. All my horror films have done well.

Belgian Horror Flick 'Vampires' Shows Promise, Gets Picked Up by IFC
Who said vampires are dead? (Sorry, couldn't help myself). We got news from IFC that they have just purchased US distribution rights to a unique vampire film from Belgium simply title Vampires. The film is from Belgium's House of Film and is directed by Vincent Lannoo, who US audiences won't know from a hole in the wall. However, what he's come up with in terms of a film is far from bland, boring, or non-descriptive.

Pottstown native puts hometown in spotlight with new movie
It's hard to imagine a movie with more Pottstown connections than "Stake Land," a horror shocker that's netted audience prizes at both the Toronto International Film Festival and Philadelphia's recently concluded CineFest.
The movie was co-written and directed by Pottstown native Jim Mickle. It was shot primarily in and around Pottstown. And a Pottstown road sign is the very first image that pops up onscreen.

INSIDIOUS stays on the top 12 after 5 weeks, slowly dripping down the chart from ... no wait! It actually rose from last week's #9 to this week's #8! INSIDIOUS has made over 32 times its budget.
You also dug LIMITLESS. After 6 weekends on the top 12, LIMITLESS finally falls from last week's #12 to this week's #14.
YOU BURIED IT
In its 5th weekend, SOURCE CODE holds steady at #10 even while losing 50.3% in ticket sales. Though it has passed its box office break even, it doesn't have enough juice left to break even for its distributor, let alone studio.
SCREAM 4. Wow! Where to begin? Sadly, Wes Craven as a Horror director hasn't had a hit since 2000's SCREAM 3 (he rocked both in the theaters and on home video with the 2005 Thriller, RED EYE). In only its second week, third weekend, SCREAM 4 falls off the top 12 from #5 to #13 with a whopping 69.2% loss in ticket sales. This is a loss added to last week's loss of 62.4% in ticket sales.
