The Third Claw of God
From Adam-Troy Castro
CASTRO DOES A FLORIDA BOOK SIGNING

Book Signing: THE THIRD CLAW OF GOD
7:00 p.m., Barnes and Noble, 2418 E. Colonial Drive, Orlando, FL 32803

Since 1987, Adam-Troy Castro has seen the publication of his 12 books and almost 80 short stories. Nominated twice for the Hugo award, three Nebula Awards, and nominated once for the Bram Stoker Award, Adam is the winner of the 2008 Seiun (Japanese Hugo). He is currently on his second Stoker nomination for his novella, The Shallow End of the Pool. Castro's prior Andrea Cort novel, Emissaries from the Dead, won the Philip K. Dick Award in 2009.

Book Description

Andrea Cort became a "war criminal" at the age of eight when an unexplained darkness invaded her soul.

Now, decades later, the Devil is calling her.

Employed by the Diplomatic Corps but secretly aiding the AI masters of the universe, Counselor Andrea Cort despises the powerful Bettelhines—unrepentant death merchants who have prospered from the annihilation of civilizations. Now curiosity compels her to answer a cryptic summons to their home world, where the only law is Bettelhine law. But a murder attempt greets her arrival at Xana's orbital entry port—and far graver peril awaits aboard the elevator transport meant to carry Andrea to the planet's surface.

Trapped miles above Xana—surrounded by suspicious Bettelhines, their slavishly loyal retainers . . . and a corpse liquefied by a 15,000-year-old weapon—Andrea must unmask an assassin or die an equally hideous death. But the true reason for her summons—and sordid secrets weaving through her own dark past—threaten to destroy Andrea Cort more completely than the Claw of God.

The Andrea Cort novels include, Emissaries from the Dead, The Third Claw of God, and a third installment currently in progress, tentatively titled The Fall of the Marionettes.

Soil's Embrace
From Joe Monks
ZOMBIES ON THE PROWL!

Writer/director talks latest project; announces premiere
CAPE CORAL, FL-From the Chanting Monks Press/Sight Unseen Pictures compound in SW Florida, it may seem like things have been quiet for a while. As Writer/director Joseph M. Monks prepares to launch his latest project, though, the truth is it's been anything but. Monks, the comic book author turned filmmaker, returns to the genre with The Soil's Embrace, the sequel to Gardens of the Dead, his successful 2003 art project with legendary illustrator Bernie Wrightson. This time around, it's DC Comics artist Rob Granito slinging the lead and ink, and Monks couldn't be happier with the results.

"Just like the first portfolio, this one was plagued by delays, changing artists, scheduling conflicts, you name it," Monks says. "But after meeting Rob at the Florida SuperCon and having my people rave about his work, we started talking, and the problems disappeared. The art's great, the havoc and mayhem has been ratcheted up, and it's twice as gory as the original, which should make everybody happy. Rob's not known for his horror work, so he really went to town with all the grisly zombie carnage."

The result is The Soil's Embrace, the second in a three-arc project that adds a unique twist to the portfolio medium. On the rear of each illustrated plate, is an original short story. While the stories stand alone, together, the five form the second story arc.

"It's not the easiest thing to do," Monks says of fitting the stories together. "You only have so much space to work with. On top of that, you have to get five different stories to hook together, and you still need to finish the arc with people feeling satisfied. Unlike a novel or film script, making it seamless presents a pretty big challenge."

The portfolio, which will premiere at the Florida SuperCon convention in Miami this June 5-7, will be available in both a regular edition and a special, limited edition signed and numbered to 250. Reservations for the limited edition are being taken on Monks' chantingmonks.com and sightunseenpictures.com web sites. The portfolio, however, isn't the only thing that's been consuming the filmmaker's time.

"I've got a novel sitting with an agent right now," Monks confirms. "It's a gritty mystery/procedural with pretty graphic overtones, entitled Torn to Pieces. The advance ink on it has been great, so I'm hoping to have a home for it for release sometime in 2010. I'm also pushing two horror screenplays around and have a third, Skin Flick, which I'm finishing up, based on a short story from my horror anthology, Stuff Out'a My Head."

As for Monks' first film, which he recently pulled from the American Horrors project, he has an update. "We're scouting locations for the new framing sequence, and we're liking Tampa for that. There's some great strip bars up there and a few have expressed interest in possibly letting us shoot there, so dotting the Is and crossing the Ts once we've settled on the rest is the next step. Since there's a chapter on me and the making of The Bunker in the upcoming New Horror Handbook, (being released by Bear Manor Media in June), I'm anxious to get that wrapped up. After so many unnecessary delays, it's time that puppy came out. No better incentive than being in a book along with guys like Eli Roth, Steve Niles and Wolf Creek's Greg McLean, just to name a few. Steve (Niles) gets a lot of mileage out of Thirty Days of Night, but I need thirty hours of day with all the stuff that's going on."

The Soil's Embrace will make its debut at the Florida Supercon, where both Monks and Granito will be appearing, in Miami, Florida, June 5, 6 and 7.

24: SEASON SEVEN

TRUE BLOOD: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON - read our review.

Movies -

BANE - Tiresome, repetitive, torture porn that drags on and on and on for two of the longest hours of my life. It eventually trips over a slapped-on ending where it pretends to be something deeper than it is. This could have been a very good ten or 15 minute short film if there wasn't that one hour and 45 minutes of pointless padding.

BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF: DIRECTOR'S CUT - re-release.

DEF BY TEMPTATION - Believe it or not, back in 1990, Samuel L. Jackson (THE EXORCIST III, JURASSIC PARK, SPHERE, DEEP BLUE SEA, UNBREAKABLE, KILL BILL Vol. 2, THE INCREDIBLES, SNAKES ON A PLANE, 1408, LAKEVIEW TERRACE, IRON MAN, THE SPIRIT) wasn't anybody. It took 1994's PULP FICTION and FRESH to make him, and once that happened, no one could break him. Still, this ain't a bad Vampire tale.

DETECTIVE STORY - If Takashi Miike makes it, its worth watching. He did, so it is.

THE DEVIL'S GROUND - Daryl Hannah (KILL BILL) continues on in her Direct to DVD career. Friends go camping in the woods, everything goes to murderous hell, that story.

EDEN LOG - A man wakes up in a cave with no idea how he got there. As he tries to piece his life together he also runs from the pursuit of some kind of hidden varmint. Will he ever find topside?

INFECTED - Boston is under a secret attack! Aliens are disguised as human but in fact are really alien CRAB PEOPLE! CRAB PEOPLE!

JAWS - Please read Kelly Parks' review

THE LAST HORROR FILM - Back in the 1980s, actor Joe Spinell made some gruesome cult crowd pleasing Horror movies with actor Caroline Munroe (THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES, CAPTAIN KRONOS: VAMPIRE HUNTER).

MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D - Please read my review.

NIGHTMARE CASTLE - Fans of Barbara Steele, rejoice. This classic old Horror movie finally gets a decent HD DVD release!

OUTLANDER - Alien varmint crashes into a viking war and has to choose sides. Nothing wrong with this movie that better writing, direction, editing couldn't solve.

SACRED FLESH - Cinemax-style softcore sexploitation masquerading as Horror. This involves the same old tropes of Catholic sacriledge (really how can you hope to compete against what we already know about molesting priests and the Vatican which knew and spent decades covering it up?), lesbian nuns and yawn inducing tepid torture. Scandalous and controversial only to the kinds of people who never watch Horror movies in the first place.

SKULL AND BONES - This outing, trying to create a genre called Homo-cidal, is about two gay sex buddies who decide to go on a murderous crime spree raping and slaughtering other homosexual college students.

TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY, SKYNET EDITION - Please read Kelly Parks review.

TREMORS - Please read Kelly Parks' review.

Monsters vs Aliens
MONSTERS LEAD THE BOX OFFICE
XMEN: ORIGINS: WOLVERINE drops to only #2 on the U.S. box office, but the ticket sales fell by over 3/4ths from last week. The folks who went to see the #1 movie, STAR TREK, were not near as many as went to see WOLVERINE last week, which goes to show just how much the studio bosses over at Paramount have gutted their most prized cash cow. We'll see how both of these movies can stand up to next week's world wide release of Tom Hank's and Ron Howard's, ANGELS and DEMONS. Actually, I predict the sequel will do worse than the first, which crawled past the profit finish line in video sales and rentals. I think A & D will get clobbered the following week by McG's TERMINATOR and he in turn will be clobbered the week after THAT by Michael Bay's TRANSFORMERS: RISE OF THE FALLEN. I'm betting on Michael Bay to win. I think the guy has finally found his niche.

I could be wrong, but judging McG's career arc so far, the guy only knows how to poorly dog-hump someone else's creation. At best it's good for a one shot novelty (Charlie's Angels) and that's it. At worst a fortune is lost on McG's impotent skills and the whole mess spins out of control (McG's Spaced). When he tries to be original, we get box office disasters like We Are Marshall. The only thing keeping McG in the game is his consortium producing group. He's one of 18 - count 'em - 18 producers on SUPERNATURAL [TV] and he doesn't get to direct. For those of you who think I'm being too harsh on Mr. Sequel McRemake, his movie after TERMINATOR SALVATION is 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA. He wants to make these things!

The biggest money maker on the top #10 charts remains MONSTERS VS. ALIENS at #8 with a total of $186 million. For a movie that cost $93 million, that ain't bad. For a movie that cost around $150 million, that ain't so great (studio take is about half the box office). But it looks like combined foreign ticket sales will double that number so MONSTERS VS. ALIENS should be a big success when going to video and make even more there. Since I really enjoyed the movie so much, that will hopefully mean that Dreamworks will make more movies like this (though not necessarily sequels to this). Between WOLVERINE and MONSTERS, monster movies dominate the box office top 10 in the U.S.

What are the scariest movies? Check out the Top 10 Scariest Movies of all time.

CSI
WHERE'D THEY GO?
It was just last year that EW reported that the most popular Mystery Thriller on TV, hell, one of the most popular TV shows period, CSI, would be losing lead character Gil Grissom (William Peterson: MANHUNTER). In a year's time the show had already lost main players Sara Sidle (Jorja Fox: MEMENTO) and Warrick Brown (Gary Dourden: ALIEN: RESURRECTION, IMPOSTOR). The Sara character was allowed to leave and come back to guest star from time to time. The Warrick character was killed off. Ahem.

So Gil's last show was in March. Now the ratings are back for the month of April and they ain't good. Last week, CSI lost 3.5 million viewers from this time last year and actually lost to Grey's Anatomy. The audience has responded. It's no good without Gil.

According to EW's exclusive report last year, No one on the show "expected" the series to take a nosedive. In truth, week after week, the show's audience has been only eroding. But month after month, its a clear drop toward a crash.
