Laid to Rest
From Ed Peters
REST IN CHROME!
BEVERLY HILLS, CA – MY BLOODY VALENTINE. FRIDAY THE 13TH, Not since the heyday of the 80’s has the slasher film seen such a resurgence in pop culture. And as the first decade of the 21st century draws to a close, Anchor Bay Entertainment proudly unveils the debut of the next great masked serial killer – ChromeSkull! On April 21st, LAID TO REST, the sophomore writing/directing effort from renowned special makeup effects wizard Robert Hall (BODY SNATCHERS, THE ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU, BLACK SCORPION, THE RELIC, GHOSTS OF MARS, VOODOO MOON, ROOM 6, TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNER CHRONICLES), will be released on DVD. The follow-up feature to his critically acclaimed semi-autobiographical Lightning Bug, and Hall’s first excursion into full-on horror as a director, Laid to Rest stars Lena Headey (THE CAVE, THE BROS. GRIMM, 300, TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNER CHRONICLES), Sean Whalen (MEN IN BLACK, IDLE HANDS, PYTHON), Bobbi Sue Luther (KILLER PAD), Lucas Till (THE OTHER SIDE, DANCE OF THE DEAD), and Headey’s “Terminator” co-star, Thomas Dekker (VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED [1995], FROM WITHIN).

LAID TO REST is the terrifying story of a young girl (Bobbi Sue Luther) who wakes up in a casket with a traumatic head injury and no memory of her identity. She quickly realizes she was abducted by ChromeSkull (Nick Principe: THE THIRST, SANDS OF OBLIVION), a metal-masked serial killer with the money and means to emulate the 1980s Slashers. Isolated in an unfamiliar rural town, “the Girl” and those who have come to her aid must survive the night and outsmart the technologically inclined murderer – who video records his vicious killings and is determined to finish his masterpiece tape featuring "the Girl." Sean Whalen, Kevin Gage (STRANGELAND, PAPARAZZI) and veteran character actor Richard Lynch (Rob Zombie’s HALLOWEEN) co-star.

LAID TO REST was photographed with the revolutionary Panasonic HPX-3000 high-definition 1080p camera in the AVC Intra Mode - the first ever feature film completed with this technology. This advance in filmmaking technology parallels ChromeSkull’s penchant for gadgetry, making this unforgettable excursion into technological terror nothing less than the first true digital horror film!

Laid To Rest not only marks ChromeSkull’s debut feature, but the DVD cuts straight to the heart of what it takes to create a memorable movie monster. Go behind the metal mask with such piercing bonus features as:

Death Note 2
LIVE-ACTION DEATH NOTE II: THE LAST NAME
Highly Anticipated Sequel To Supernatural Action Mystery Based On Popular Manga And Animated Series

San Francisco, CA, January 30, 2009 – VIZ Pictures, an affiliate of VIZ Media, LLC that focuses on Japanese live-action film distribution, has announced the highly anticipated DVD release of DEATH NOTE II: THE LAST NAME, based on the hit supernatural action mystery manga (graphic novel) and animated series. The DVD will feature both the original Japanese dialogue with English subtitles and the English dubbed version by the outstanding voice cast of the animated series. The Red Hot Chili Peppers again contribute the theme song. Bonus features include a special segment, “Making of DEATH NOTE II” and the original Japanese theatrical trailer. The DVD will be distributed in North America by VIZ Media. The estimated street date for DEATH NOTE II: THE LAST NAME is February 10, 2009.

DEATH NOTE II: THE LAST NAME is the sequel to the phenomenal hit live-action movie DEATH NOTE, based on the hit manga series written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. The DEATH NOTE live-action DVD, released in September 2008, was ranked as #1 in Japanese Films in North America and #34 in the Live-Action category. As the sequel of DEATH NOTE and once again directed by the renowned monster filmmaker Shusuke Kaneko, DEATH NOTE II: THE LAST NAME concludes the titanic battle between the two geniuses Light and L.

The story picks up with Light Yagami (Tatsuya Fujiwara) joining the investigation team in pursuit of the serial killer known as ‘Kira’. While L (Kenichi Matsuyama) still strongly suspects that Light is ‘Kira’, Light continues to seek out the real name of L so that he can kill him with his Death Note. Making things even more unpredictable is the 'Eyes of Death' that the second Kira possesses, enabling the owner to know the true identity and lifespan of any person. Light Yagami soon learns the identity of the other Kira and wants to join forces to get rid of L. Will L be able to catch "Kira" before he gets killed? Who will be the last name written in the Death Note?

“We’re very excited to announce the highly anticipated DVD release of DEATH NOTE II: THE LAST NAME,” says Seiji Horibuchi, President and CEO of VIZ Pictures. “Is Light Yagami a crazed serial killer or merely society’s self-appointed solution to crime? DEATH NOTE is the latest manga and anime series to gain widespread international popularity, and the success of the first live-action film has primed audiences for this edgy sequel. As interest in DEATH NOTE continues to grow, we invite fans to delve into the psychological drama of this newest release from VIZ Pictures.”

VIZ Pictures has also announced 2 special giveaway promotions to coincide with the DVD release. Fans are encouraged to go to Viz-Pictures.com and answer the quick survey before February 28. 10 random winners will be selected to receive a special DEATH NOTE II poster.

Readers of SHONEN JUMP magazine are encouraged to enter the exclusive DEATH NOTE II contest where 10 lucky fans will each win a copy of the DEATH NOTE II DVD, and 3 very lucky fans will each win a copy of the DVD and an autograph from one of the lead actors (Kenichi Matsuyama, Tatsuya Fujiwara and Erika Toda). Contest details will be in the March 2009 issue of Shonen Jump magazine, which will hit newsstands on February 3.

The DEATH NOTE manga and animated series have become extremely popular domestically. The 37-episode animated series is seen by millions each week on cable broadcast and the series is also distributed on DVD by VIZ Media (rated T+ for Older Teens). On the print side, DEATH NOTE 13: HOW TO READ, a companion volume to the successful manga series, also published domestically by VIZ Media, was recently ranked in USA Today's Top 150 list of America's best-selling books.

Wichblade Annual 01
From Filip Sablik
WITCHBLADE ANNUAL 2009

Top Cow's biggest series presents its first-ever annual issue.
LOS ANGELES, Calif., January ??, 2009 – Top Cow Productions, Inc. announced today that fan favorite Witchblade will get a long deserved, first-ever, annual issue in Witchblade Annual 2009, something diehard fans have been waiting for since the series debut in 1995.

"I had a great time working with all the guys at Top Cow during Pilot Season, so when they asked me to pitch ideas for the Witchblade Annual, I jumped at the chance. I love what Ron Marz is doing with the book, so I tried to remain true to the tone he set," commented writer Jay Faerber.

Witchblade Annual 2

This 40-page epic will include a supernatural detective story, featuring everyone's favorite Witchblade bearer, Sara Pezzini and her partner, Patrick Gleason. The talented Jay Faerber, writer of Noble Causes and Pilot Season: Urban Myths, delivers this first tale, alongside Top Cow's very own Eric Basaluda, the innovative artist behind Magdalena and Witchblade/Devi.

"I think Eric's one of the best guys working in the Top Cow stable and I was thrilled when I found out he was going to be illustrating this story," explained Faerber, "I think it really plays to his strengths, and Witchblade fans are going to love what he brings to the table."

Upcoming writers Joshua Cozine and Joe Henderson bring back fan favorite character Ian Nottingham in a second tale. Accompanied by Sheldon Mitchell, the artist of Freshmen: Summer Vacation Special, who puts pencil to paper to show what happens to cellmates who have the misfortune to be incarcerated with the dangerous Nottingham.

"Witchblade has been around for almost 15 years and we've never done an Annual," commented Filip Sablik, Publisher of Top Cow, "We had a great story from Jay Faerber and this seemed like the ideal way to present it. Add in some stunning artwork by Eric and it's sure to leave an impression with fans."

Underworld: RIse of the Lycans
From VFXWorld
RISE OF THE CREATURE DESIGNER TO DIRECTOR

Famed creature designer Patrick Tatopoulos moved into the director's chair for the third Underworld film, Rise of the Lycans, with even more vfx than the first two.
By Alain Bielik
Lycans (Werewolves) and Death Dealers (Vampires) are back for the third installment of the successful Underworld horror franchise. This time, though, the artist helming the project is the very person who designed them in the first place. With UNDERWORLD: RISE OF THE LYCANS (now playing from Screen Gems), famed creature designer and production designer Patrick Tatopoulos (GODZILLA [1998], SUPERNOVA, BATTLEFIELD EARTH, UNDERWORLD [ALL], I, ROBOT, THE CAVE, SILENT HILL, I AM LEGEND, THE RUINS) makes his directorial debut with an origin story that takes us back to an ancient time, when lycans were mere slaves to their vampire masters.

A veteran of the two previous movies, Visual Effects Supervisor James McQuaide enjoyed a great collaboration with Tatopoulos. "One of the unique pleasures of Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (UW3) was working with a director who had both production designed Underworld: Evolution (UW2) and had designed/built all the creatures for all of the Underworld pictures. As a result, there was a knowledgeable attention to detail that provided the visual effects (and the movie, for that matter) with a level of reality that it very likely would never have had.

Zombies Ahead
From Feo Amante
OBEY ALL TRAFFIC SIGNS

Okay, so you're driving along the highway and you come across a sign that looks like this. Naturally you think (of course you think) that some joker hacked the electric sign. That's the most logical, reasonable answer.

And yet, one must ask, if you really DID drive down the highway and see a sign like this, how much more would you need to see before you decided that, "Maybe I should just turn right back around..."

Would it take an major accident in front of you? Cop cars with lights-a flashing? Or maybe, off the side of the road, you saw a couple of people aimlessly staggering through a field.

As fellow Horror Thriller fans, do you ever ask yourself, "Yeah, but what if?"

The Garbage Man
From Hart Fisher
AMERICAN HORRORS BRAND LANDS ON AMERICAN SHORES!

LOS ANGELES, CA- The scariest man in America, Hart D. Fisher, through his production company Crime Pays Inc., announced that he has entered into an agreement with Todd Taylor’s Indie Pictures to distribute his American Horrors brand of horror themed programming throughout America beginning in June with the long awaited DVD release of Fisher’s directorial debut, The Garbage Man.

“This distribution agreement, along with our foreign broadcast television deals, is a major opportunity for independent horror creators across America.” Said producer Hart D. Fisher. “I will be overseeing all aspects of this deal personally, from film selection, advertising, marketing, packaging, the works. Todd is a visionary businessman with a great hunger to change the way the horror business works. Together we’re going to turn this genre on its head.”

The first film released under the American Horrors label through Indie Pictures, The Garbage Man, will be released in stores June, 2009. The DVD release of the critically acclaimed film will feature an introduction by the director discussing the tragedies associated with the making of the film, namely the motel murder of Mr. Fisher’s first love and live in girlfriend during the making of The Garbage Man and the subsequent decade of murder trials that followed. Testifying and suffering through 3 different murder trials to keep her murderer locked up in prison, Mr. Fisher has never discussed these events publicly, until now.

Says Fisher, “There’s a great deal of personal pain associated with The Garbage Man, it’s not something I’ve ever been able to talk about publicly, but now with the documentary on my life shooting, the release of Garbage Man coming up, I find it’s something I’m going to have to deal with. I mean, this is an intensely disturbing film, even for me.”

Mr. Fisher is currently seeking out more indie filmmakers, feature films, shorts and horror themed music videos to be part of the American Horrors brand that reaches into tens of millions of households across countries including France, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Austria and now America via Broadcast television, DVD, VOD and Internet downloads. Hellbound
From E.C.McMullen Jr.
BILLY'S BIG TIME

The fate of Los Angeles Zoo resident elephant, Billy, has been a recent bone of contention. His current living condition is sub par and its been that way for far too long. But the wheels of city politics are slow without activism. And what happens when various activists with various ideas of "what's best" come together? Sparks fly, conflicts arise, and the needs of one elephant takes a backseat to Actor egos and Hollywood controversy.

Various Animal Activists came together and clashed together as they spoke and heard the vote of the Los Angeles City Council. Finally, the council voted in favor of the activists who wanted to support and maintain not just the life of Billy the elephant, but the pachyderm species as a whole. Horror Thriller movie director, Tony Randel (HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER II, AMITYVILLE: 1992) said,
"I'm thrilled that the Los Angeles City Council has voted to proceed with the construction and completion of the Pachyderm Rain Forest at the Los Angeles Zoo."

The Objective
EVIL IS OBJECTIVE
Writer / Director Daniel Myrick hasn't had a good time of it movie-wise over the past decade. Despite the early promise of THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, Myrick's movies have since gone Direct to video and haven't got much love from the Horror Thriller crowd. But that all might change with his latest film, which has been winning awards at various film festivals. According to the press release,

"A decade after The Blair Witch Project successfully dissuaded many would-be campers from venturing out into the woods, one of its co-creators is back with a similarly unsettling descent into the unknown. In the supernatural thriller THE OBJECTIVE, writer-director Daniel Myrick locates the action in a remote mountain region of Afghanistan, where a team of US Special Ops forces is dispatched with the ostensible orders of locating an influential Muslim cleric. While on the mission they find themselves lost in a Middle Eastern 'Bermuda Triangle' of ancient evil and faced with an enemy that none of them could have imagined."

Just recently, Daniel Myrick has been getting back on his movie feet as a producer. Read my review of the Myrick produced, ALIEN RAIDERS.

Meanwhile, check out the official website, ObjectiveMovie.

Written by Myrick, Mark Patton and Wes Clark Jr., and produced by Zev Guber and Jeremy Wall, the cast of The Objective includes Jonas Ball (The Killing of John Lennon), Matt Anderson, Jon Huertas, Michael C. Williams, Sam Hunger and Jeff Prewett.

Coraline
From AWN.com
TADAHIRO UESUGI TALKS CORALINE DESIGN

The famed Japanese illustrator divulges how his first movie design experience on Coraline has impacted his style.

In what turned out to be a crafty coup for Coraline (opening Feb. 6 from Focus Features), director Henry Selick tapped renowned Japanese illustrator Tadahiro Uesugi to serve as visual designer for the stop-motion adaptation of Neil Gaiman's novella. In Coraline, the eponymous young protagonist unlocks a mysterious door in her new home to a fantastical parallel world that's much more exciting than her drab one.

"Tadahiro's heavily influenced by late ['50s] and early ['60s] American illustration, the kind that's portrayed in Mad Men, back when photography wasn't the first place you'd go to solve things," Selick told Metropolis. "It's a fresh, illustrative style, very graphic, but he adds a touch of soul - a tiny bit of reflection in a water surface, a shadow, a disturbance of atmosphere. His work breathes."

Uesugi recently discussed his first-time cinematic experience doing concept designs on Coraline with AWN, and you can enjoy some of his exquisite work.

Dead & Buried
TOMORROW'S DVDS TODAY!
With few exceptions, movies and television shows are released onto DVD in the U.S. on Tuesday. These are the movies getting wide release tomorrow.

Television -

THE INVADERS - Second Season. Will anyone listen to crazy David Vincent (Roy Thinnes: THE FAR SIDE OF THE SUN) and his talk about strangers from outer space? Maybe...

Documentary -

Stanley Wiater's DARK DREAMERS - Stanley spent years bringing together the best writers and creators in the realm of Horror Thrillers and not just movies. I can't speak for the quality of the packaging (you should have seen my review copy! E-freaking- GAD!), but for the Horror Thriller afficianado, this 4 disc DVD set is a must have.

Movies -

CLAY - A brutal killer raised by an abusive father, who told him Horror stories during his childhood, stalks the streets, looking for victims.

DEAD & BURIED - Now on BLU-RAY. Please read my review.

DEAD OF NIGHT - A trilogy of short movies all presented by Dan Curtis and based on the stories of Richard Matheson (LAST MAN ON EARTH, THE OMEGA MAN, KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER, KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STRANGLER, THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE, STIR OF ECHOES, Masters of Horror: DANCE OF THE DEAD, I AM LEGEND). Stars Ed Begley Jr. (CAT PEOPLE) and Joan Hackett (TERMINAL MAN).

Dario Argento's DOOR INTO DARKNESS - A four episode television series from 1973. Argento produced the four films from directors, Luigi Cozzi and Mario Foglietti. Argento wrote and directed two of these under a psuedonym.

DEMONIACS - For those of you who crave sophisticated French cinema: Two sisters survive a shipwreck only to be brutally beaten, raped, and murdered by some brutal murdering rapists. The girls come back to, well, existence, thanks to some hocus pocus and go on a revenge spree.

FINAL REMAINS - Teens at a party get their asses handed to them.

FODOR'S HAMLET - Hamlet as a Horror story. Well, I always thought so.

THE GENE GENERATION - With Bai Ling (THE CROW, THE BREED) and Faye Dunaway (THE EYES OF LAURA MARS) this direct to DVD SciFi action Thriller might be better than expected.

GUTTERBALLS - Rape, sadistic butchering, and lots of blood and gore. Oh sure, you COULD get all offended, but really, a homicidal maniac who kills with his impeccable bowling skills? How can you turn that down?

KISS NAPOLEON GOODBYE - Nearly 30 years ago, Henry Rollins and Lydia Lunch were hot cult shit in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York. 19 years ago they made this movie to reinvigorate their relevancy. Today they get a quiet unheralded release on DVD. Time marches on.

LAKEVIEW TERRACE - Please read my review.

MERCURY MAN - Crazy ass is the perfect description for this superhero film from Thailand. Just crazy-ass, man.

REDNECK ZOMBIES - This is the 20th Anniverssary Edition and just goes to prove that with time, all Horror Thriller movies become "Cult Classics".

SHARKS IN VENICE - What most people who have never been to Venice don't really understand about Venice, is that the water in the canals is ankle to knee deep in most places. Sure you could be attacked by a shark in knee deep water, but not sharks THIS freaking big! Stars Stephen Baldwin (XCHANGE).

SINGLE BLACK FEMALE - Did you ever see SINGLE WHITE FEMALE? Yeah, well now she's black.

VAMPYRES - Not all vampyres feed on human blood, but they all suck.

His work has appeared in On Spec, TransVersions, Prairie Fire, Northern Frights, Dark Planet, Descant, ChiZine, and the Tesseracts and Queer Fear anthology series. He is a multiple Honorable Mention recipient for Year's Best Fantasy and Horror, and his short story "Assassination and the New World Order," which is included in Horror Story and Other Horror Stories, won First Prize in the Prairie Fire Speculative Fiction Writing Contest.
