From Tara Busch
BE A HATER

Author David Moody self-published Hater online in 2006. Without an agent, he succeeded in selling the film rights to Director Guillermo del Toro (BLADE II, THE DEVIL'S BACKBONE, PAN'S LABYRINTH, HELLBOY [all]) and Producer Mark Johnson (WHAT LIES BENEATH, DRAGONFLY). With the official publication of Hater (2/17/2009), David is poised to make a significant mark as a writer of “farther out” fiction of all varieties.

In the tradition of H. G. Wells and Richard Matheson, Hater is one man’s story of his place in a world gone mad— a world infected with fear, violence, and HATE.

FeoNote: Director J.A. Bayona (THE ORPHANAGE) is onboard as director of HATER, which is tentatively scheduled as a 2010 release.

SELICK TALKS CORALINE
By Bill Desowitz
After visiting the magnificent Coraline set up at Laika in Portland last year and recently seeing the completed movie that opens today through Focus Features -- the first stop-motion feature made in 3-D -- I finally had the chance to sit down with director Henry Selick last week to discuss his latest stop-motion journey. Sitting near a Coraline maquette on an end table next to a copy of Neil Gaiman's Newberry Award-winning The Graveyard Book, the soft-spoken Selick very much conveyed the "Rock 'n' roll meets Da Vinci" aura that his late friend Joe Ranft once offered. In fact, Selick pays marvelous tribute to Ranft in Coraline, but you'll just have discover it for yourself.

Visit him at MySpace.com/ JamesCheetham.
Few writers can claim membership in both Cyberpunk and Splatterpunk movements (granted they were both short lived and really not movements so much as marketing schemes). All the same, today's birthday boy is still busy at it and still mentoring the new wave of writers. So Happy Birthday to
Writer/Musician John Shirley (Books: DEMONS, CRAWLERS, AND THE ANGEL WITH TELEVISION EYES, DOOM, DARKNESS DIVIDED, Music: Blue Oyster Cult, Film: THE CROW, TWISTS OF TERROR [TV]) who is 56.
Writer Mark Worthen (VICIOUS SHIVERS, OPEN GRAVES, THICKER THAN WATER) is 47.

FRIDAY THE 13TH: SECOND SEASON

TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE: THE FIRST SEASON

Movies -

A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE - Now in BLU-RAY. This movie is a rare emotional powerhouse from director David Cronenberg.

ARE YOU SCARED 2 - Sadly, Director John Landis (AN AMERICAN WEREWOLF IN LONDON, INNOCENT BLOOD, DEER WOMAN) fell so low he is reduced to directing direct to video sequels.

BLINDNESS - The movie was based on the Nobel Prize winning novel by José Saramago (of course, they give those Noble Peace prizes out like peanuts these days. Al Gore won his in 2007, after making four different trips to Switzerland to beg for it, and his stiffest competition was Rush Freaking Limbaugh! Noble Peace Prize winner, Yasser Arafat must have spun in his grave.). The movie is not going to win any prizes.

DEATH NOTE II: THE LAST NAME - The angels are back to play a psychological chess game among the remaining survivors of their last outing. But whose name is the last one on the Death Note?

DOROTHY MILLS - A kid has the power to channel the dead - or is it the dead that have the power to possess a child?

IMPRINT - If you like Ghost stories with Native American folklore, this might suit you.

LODGER - Detective Chandler Manning (Alfred Molina: SPECIES, SPIDER-MAN 2) is called to a crime scene and a murder mystery. It's a Method of Operation he is quite familiar with, as its identical to a series of killings from seven years ago. And Manning knows this because HE was the one who sent the killer to his execution all of those years ago. Which can mean only one of two things: This is a very detailed copycat killing, or Manning sent an innocent man to his death. Also stars Simon Baker (LAND OF THE DEAD, THE RING TWO).

THE LODGER - The original 1926 Alfred Hitchcock movie.

MY NAME IS BRUCE - It's Bruce Campbell, in a movie about Bruce Campbell, in a town where people mistake him for Bruce Campbell the action hero. Except he's not. He's just Bruce. Think of it as The Three Amigos with two less amigos. But funnier because it has Bruce Campbell instead of Chevy Chase.

OTTO - He wanders through the unlife as a palindrome goth zombie. Then one day he stumbles across a movie set where they are making a gay zombie movie (at last! Zombies with a sexual identity). Will Otto be typecast?

RED MIST - aka FREAK DOG. Young Medical students play a vicious prank on the Creepy Janitor. To make matters worse, they try and revive him from his coma with an experimental drug. Now that he's up and about - INSIDE other people - and a homicidal maniac to boot, them dang ol' students r' gonna get whuts coming to 'em by Ghod!

RED VICTORIA - A snooty writer who needs the money, takes on a job writing a script for a genre he abhors - Horror. Luckily, his muse appears in the form of a sexy Undead varmint named Victoria. The bad news is she inspires him to write Horror my cutting a bloody horrific swath through the locals.

TERMINAL INVASION - Bruce Campbell again, with all of the quality you've come to expect from the SciFi Channel.

LEGENDARY WRITER MARV WOLFMAN

Joins Creative Team Developing DC Universe™ Online Video Game
AUSTIN, Texas - Feb. 6, 2009 - In another sign of Sony Online Entertainment LLC's (SOE) commitment to the upcoming DC Universe™ Online (DCUO) massively multiplayer online video game, the company today announced that award-winning writer Marv Wolfman has joined the creative team at WildStorm Productions that is working with SOE to bring the DC Universe to life on the PLAYSTATION® 3 computer entertainment system and the PC.

Wolfman will write compelling story arcs, exciting quests and in-game events for DCUO. Wolfman's seminal run on The New Teen Titans is a favorite among comic book fans, and along with his work on series such as Crisis on Infinite Earths, Batman and Superman, he has become one of the most recognizable names in comics of the last three decades. His illustrious comic credits also include creating and writing Blade, The Vampire Hunter.

Wolfman joins an all-star roster already at work on DCUO, including legendary comic book artist Jim Lee, who serves as the game's executive creative director, and renowned DC writer Geoff Johns, who is crafting the game's overarching story. DCUO is currently in development at SOE's Austin studio in collaboration with DC Comics and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.

"Getting Marv on board with DC Universe Online shows just how passionate and determined we are about making sure this franchise delivers for both video game players and comic book fans alike," said John Smedley, president of SOE. "This is a true collaboration between the top talent at DC and SOE, and I believe the result of this creative alliance will be one of the most exciting, memorable online game experiences to date."

Wolfman has been a creative force both on and off the pages of comic books. Wolfman recently worked as a writer for the popular Teen Titans animated series. In addition to Blade, which was turned into a TV series and three hit movies starring Wesley Snipes, he created Bullseye, the prime villain in the 2003 movie Daredevil. Wolfman has received numerous awards and recognition for his work, including the SCRIBE award for best speculative fiction novel adaptation for Superman Returns, and a special commendation by the White House for his work on three anti-drug comics for the "Just Say No" program.

"As a gamer, this is a dream project in many ways," said Wolfman. "I get to create new stories in the DC Universe that will make this video game world a truly unique, unforgettable experience."

From Stacy Miles
On Saturday at New York Comic-Con, Marv Wolfman will join Jim Lee, Geoff Johns and SOE developers Jens Andersen, Wes Yanagi and Jared Carr for the panel "Bringing the DC Universe to Life Online." The panel will take place at the Jacob Javits Center in Room 1A24 from 4:15-5:15pm.
Following the panel, SOE will host a fan party in the same room, where fans and press will be able to get their hands on DC Universe Online.

American Horrors
From Michelle McKee
HART D. FISHER JOINS LEADING TRUE CRIME SITE, IN COLD BLOG

LOS ANGELES, CA — In Cold Blog (ICB), founded by Los Angeles Times and Borders International best selling author Corey Mitchell, is the Internet’s leading true crime blog. With several contributing writers that cover the gamut from Pulitzer Prize nominees, award winning journalists and authors, criminal justice and medical professionals, victim’s rights advocates and even family members of the victim of a serial killer, In Cold Blog has been providing a unique voice to issues involving crime and justice since June 2007.

When In Cold Blog’s editor, Michelle McKee, went looking for someone to represent the voice of America’s freedom of speech, censorship, morality gone wrong, exploitation, and the removal of one’s Constitutional guarantee of freedom, she looked no further than the notorious publisher of Boneyard Press, Hart D. Fisher.

Hart D. Fisher

Fisher’s opinions on serial killers and serial killer culture have been sought by numerous television producers for programs such as ABC's DayOne, CNN's Murder By Numbers, Entertainment Tonight, Larry King Live, The Jerry Springer Show, CNN Headline News, A&E's Biography, and in magazines such as Time, Tattoo Savage, Hero Illustrated, People, The Comics Journal, and the non-fiction best seller The A-Z Guide to Serial Killers, to name only a few.

An individual who takes his work to the extreme, Fisher pushes the envelope on the boundaries of freedom of expression beyond that which many are comfortable with. His work has been banned and pulled from shelves and his books have been destroyed by the distribution house itself.

With credits dotting his portfolio that include the production of indie horror films, the creation of serial killer comic books, the production of pornography, horror porn to be specific, as well as critically acclaimed poetry, Hart D. Fisher has been called one of the "100 Most Important People In The Comics Industry" by Hero Illustrated. He has also been one of the most universally despised individuals to have ever set foot in adult theme comics, let alone within in the crime genre itself. As the controversial publisher behind Boneyard Press, Fisher created Jeffrey Dahmer: An Unauthorized Biography of a Serial Killer, A comic book that started a firestorm which brought death threats, stalkers, lawsuits, protest marches, including a threatened KKK protest march on his home in Illinois, a SWAT team to his door, and a request by the local police to leave town. As managing editor of Glenn Danzig’s publishing company Verotik, Fisher created a comic book murder story, Verotika #4, “A Taste of Cherry,” that was considered to be so offensive and obscene it shut down Planet Comics in Oklahoma City in the early 90’s and the work was banned. It is still banned in that state today.

Even OJ Simpson has sued Fisher for his satirical portrayal in Boneyard Press’ comic book creations. Hart Fisher produces the type of material that members of the morality police generally object to. His work is considered by some to be vile and offensive, and it is exactly the type of unpopular speech that is at the forefront of assaults by the so called moral majority against our Constitutional liberties. It is the type of material that is typically blamed for various public ills and criminal activity; after all, we've all heard what the Uptight Ninny Brigade has to say about sex crimes, metal music and video games.

Fisher couldn't be a more appropriate voice representing freedom of expression, and the shredding of the Untied States Constitution. Hart D. Fisher has fought for his right as an American citizen to exercise his freedom of speech – and he has lost.

Weston Ochse
From Weston Ochse
WESTON OCHSE TO BE GoH AT TUSCON 36

The Baja Arizona Science Fiction Association has invited author Weston Ochse (SCARY REDNECKS AND OTHER INBRED HORRORS, APPALACHIAN GALAPAGOS [both w/David Whitman], NATURAL SELECTION) to be their Guest of Honor (GoH) for the 36th running of TusCon, dubbed "The Best Little Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror Convention in Arizona." Previous GoHs include Theodore Sturgeon, Vernor Vinge, Karl Edward Wagner, Diana Gabaldon, John Ringo, Laurel K. Hamilton, and Stephen R. Donaldson. Began in 1974, TusCon has a rich history of supporting the interests of fans, authors, artists, librarians, booksellers and gamers in Tucson and the Southwest.

This year´s convention will be held November 13-15, 2009, at the InnSuites Hotel in Tucson, Arizona. Last year found the weather in the low 80s, with convention goers swimming in the Olympic-sized pool, drinking and conversing beneath the fronds of palm trees. Not a bad way to spend a fall weekend. In addition to regular convention programming, TusCon has a dealer´s room, an art show, a gaming room and a ConSuite where food and drinks are served to convention goers. A breakfast buffet is included in the room rate, as is a free happy hour every evening.

Weston Ochse is the Bram Stoke Award-winning author of the novel, Scarecrow Gods. In addition to novels, his work has appeared in comic books, anthologies, professional writer´s guides and magazines. He was nominated for the Pushcart Prize in 2003 and holds a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing (Pending June 2009). Current works in print include Scarecrow Gods, Redemption Roadshow, Vampire Outlaw of the Milky Way and The Golden Thread. Blaze of Glory will be available from Bloodletting Press by the time of the convention.

Weston is married to fellow author, Yvonne Navarro (AFTERAGE), and lives in Southern Arizona. His website can be found at westonochse.com.

General information for TusCon 36, as well as registration information, can be found at http://home.earthlink.net/~basfa/.

FeoNote: Nobody, not even Weston asked me to make a comment here. But I know a lot of you have never been to BASFA, perhaps have never even heard of BASFA, and your first impression will be their website when you click through that there link. So I'll say it before you do, as I don't want you to avoid this convention when you see the page.

Holy Crap what the hell is WRONG with that website? Pretty freaking luddite for a purported Science Fiction convention! And Good luck with registering for 2009! BASFA is virtually unchanged since the dawn of the Internet (they got rid of their old background). Most of their links are broken - including the one to Weston Ochse' website - or haven't been updated in over ten years. Here's an archive snapshot from April 2001 (web.archive.org/web/20010515214843/http://home.earthlink.net/~basfa/). They still have a link on their homepage to Horrornet.com before it was .com and back when it was up at Michigan Tech in the early 1990s! Seriously! There is just no damn excuse for that! Great Cthulhu is that an ugly website!* I sat on this story for a day and as of this writing, they still haven't updated their page since November 2, 2008. You CAN'T register for 2009 yet! I mean, anyone can have broken links. I probably do myself on some of the old archive pages. But we're not talking about some website 100+ pages deep. I'm talking right on their freaking home page! DAMN, MAN!

So if you are in the Arizona area, you should check it out the convention all the same. Half-assed website notwithstanding, I hear they put on a good show (I guess the folks who run the show don't run the website). Besides, Weston Ochse is the Guest of Honor! He's an old feoamante.com alumni. And once again, this is Weston's proper website WestonOchse.com/

*And I know ugly websites! So if you think the BASFA website is being terribly retro-trendy rebellious, here are some more that you should love.
TheBigUglyWebsite
Havenworks.com

And if you think I'm being unpardonably cruel to BASFA, just click the link and look at that goddam website!

Death Note: Another Note

VIZ MEDIA DOMINATES 2008 BOOKSCAN TOP 20

San Francisco, CA, February 4, 2009 – VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media), one of the entertainment industry’s most innovative and comprehensive publishing, animation and licensing companies, has announced that hit manga (graphic novel) properties including NARUTO, DEATH NOTE, BLEACH and VAMPIRE KNIGHT dominated 15 of the Top 20 spots on the recently released list of Top 20 Graphic Novels for 2008. Nielsen BookScan, one of the publishing industry’s leading sales indicators, publishes the list annually.

NARUTO was the top VIZ Media manga title on the list, placing highest at Number 2 overall with nine volumes of the internationally popular series placing in the Top 20 at #’s 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 15, 16 and 18. This is the first time so many volumes of a single series have dominated this particular list. Three other VIZ Media manga titles made the top 20 as well: DEATH NOTE (with three spots at #9, 12 and 19), BLEACH (at #17), and the gothic melodrama VAMPIRE KNIGHT (securing two spots at #14 and 20) joined NARUTO in the Top 20.

“It’s very gratifying to see such continued strong sales of these top titles throughout 2008,” says Gonzalo Ferreyra, Vice President Sales & Product Marketing, VIZ Media. “Six of the Top 10 graphic novels featured on the 2007 list were also NARUTO volumes, and with the launch of the new NARUTO SHIPPUDEN story arc last year we’re very pleased to see the series continuing to dominate the list. Likewise, we are also very excited to see other unique manga titles like DEATH NOTE, BLEACH and VAMPIRE KNIGHT featured among the Top 20. Each of these series is critically acclaimed and holds a wide appeal that transcends multiple reader demographics. As we begin 2009, we look forward to a variety of VIZ Media manga continuing to find such a loyal and sizable domestic audience.”

Not Forgotten
From Sue Procko
ANCHOR BAY FILMS PICKS UP MYRIAD’S NOT FORGOTTEN

(FeoNote: Some late-breaking news from Anchor Bay. Meaning that this was released on January 30th, but it wasn't emailed to me until today. If you've already read this elsewhere, ignore it.)

Anchor Bay Films has picked up all rights for the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia for Myriad Pictures’ and Skyline Pictures’ intense mystery thriller NOT FORGOTTEN, starring Simon Baker (LAND OF THE DEAD, THE RING TWO), Paz Vega (FADE TO BLACK, THE SPIRIT), Michael DeLorenzo (PHANTOMS), Benito Martinez (SAW), and directed by Dror Soref, who co-wrote the script with Tomas Romero. Soref and Donald Zuckerman are the film’s producers; Executive Producers are Michelle Seward and Kirk D’Amico. The deal comes on the heels of two successful screenings of the film at the just-completed Slamdance Film Festival, and represents the first theatrical distribution pick up from the Festival this year.

Anchor Bay Films President Bill Clark said about the acquisition, “We are thrilled to be working with Myriad Pictures and releasing Not Forgotten. Over the past year, Simon Baker has established himself as an even bigger star with feature as well as television audiences and we know they’ll love this film too.”

Baker plays Jack Bishop, a man with a secret past that is revealed when his daughter is kidnapped. To find her, he enlists the help of the cult La Santa Muerte and returns to his roots in the squalid, seedy barrios of Mexico. In the twists and turns that follow, Bishop is forced to confront his own demons and the growing suspicions of his wife Amaya, played by Paz Vega, until the surprise ending.

La Santa Muerte is a centuries-old mixture of Catholicism and paganism in which devotees pray to the saint known as The Holy Death for revenge and other acts against their enemies. It has a particularly strong presence in U.S./Mexico border towns.

The crew includes such highly respected professionals as Director of Photography Steven Bernstein, ASC (FORSAKEN, SCARY MOVIE 2), Production Designer Craig Stearns (John Carpenter's THE FOG, Tobe Hooper's INVADERS FROM MARS, Stephen King's CHILDREN OF THE CORN, THE BLOB [1988], THE MASK, Stephen King's THE SHINING [TV], Stephen King & Clive Barker's QUICKSILVER HIGHWAY [TV], Stephen King's STORM OF THE CENTURY [TV], Stephen King's ROSE RED [TV], Stephen King's KINGDOM HOSPITAL [TV]), and Academy Award®-winning composer Mark Isham (THE HITCHER, BLADE, IMPOSTOR, THE MIST) and composer Cindy Connor (BLADE, IMPOSTOR, NEXT, THE MIST).

Television -
COLUMBO - Possibly the most iconic television detective ever.

MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 Volume XIV - Not so hard to believe that there are that many bad movies in existence. Sad to believe, but not hard to believe.

Documentaries -
HIS NAME WAS JASON - A documentary on everybody's favorite, supernatural, Hockey-mask wearing malcontent.

PAURA - LUCIO FULCI REMEMBERED Vol. 1 _A loving and attempted honest look at legendary fan favorite, Lucio Fulci, as seen through the eyes of the people who knew him. 90 interviews in all in 240 minutes.

Movies -

BLACK SWARM - Genetically modified wasps? What was the point of that, I ask you? Stars Robert Englund.

BLITZKRIEG: ESCAPE FROM STALAG 69 - Okay, when you have a title like that, you AIN'T going for Otto Preminger, m'kay? ANd since this is the SPecial SS Edition, just kick it back for some over the top outrageously brutal and sexually charged Horror Thriller shenanigans.

BLOOD PREDATOR - As if they didn't have enough problems, plane crash victims lost in the mountains have to deal with hungry aliens from outer space.

THE BLOODY APE - Ridiculously low budget, over the top sex and Horror underground from 1997. This was the early warped vision from Keith Crocker. The man who, over ten years later, would make BLITZKRIEG: ESCAPE FROM STALAG 69.

BRAIN STORM - Hey, what if someone could invent a device that could visually interpret your thoughts and experiences? Further, what if those thoughts and experiences could be recorded and experienced by consumers? What was farfetched in 1983 is cutting edge tech in 2009. Stars Christopher Walken.

DEAD NOON - Shit Kicker Horror Thriller. Made for only $4,000 bucks and starring SAG actors (Kane Hodder: HOUSE II, 2001 MANIACS, HATCHET, ROOM 6, HACK! - among them), Andrew Weist's little flick won the Tabloid Witch Award Film Festival for Best Picture.

DIARY - Oxide Pang, one half of the notorious Pang Bros., strikes out on his own with this Horror Thriller. And Oxide KNOWS how to make a freaking Horror Thriller!

FRIDAY THE 13th - Before there was the mask, before there was really even a Jason to speak of, there was the original. This one is reputed to be UNCUT. Also in BLU-RAY.

FRIDAY THE 13th Part 2 - This is the movie where Jason Voorhees came into his own as a mask wearing unstoppable killer, modeled after Michael from HALLOWEEN.

FRIDAY THE 13th 3D - At last, the movie that had Jason first don the Hockey mask, comes to viewers as it was meant to be seen: in 3D (complete with 3D glasses).

5IVE - Post apocalyptic atomic bomb Horror Thriller movie from 1951.

THE HILLS HAVE EYES: UNRATED (2006) goes BLU-RAY. Please read my review.

THE JASON COLLECTION - There came a point where FRIDAY THE 13th stopped being FRIDAY THE 13th and became JASON movies. This collection brings together the first three movies that were all JASON - except for the one that was FREDDY vs. JASON.

KILLER MOVIE - Comedy Horror movie that tries to be the real thing in both genres.

NITE TALES - Deon Taylor is a black African-American writer and director who makes Horror Thriller movies HIS way. Stars Flavor Flav, DeRay Davis (THE FOG [2005], SCARY MOVIE 4), and Sticky Fingaz (LEPRECHAUN: BACK 2 tha HOOD, HOUSE OF THE DEAD 2, BLADE: THE SERIES [TV]).

SICK AND THE DEAD - Being a serial killing homicidal maniac is kinda redundant when you're up to your ass in the zombie apocalypse. Still, after a year of living "clean" and abruptly confronted by a handful of survivors, should you change your ways and insure your survival, or is hunting humans an itch you've been meaning to scratch?

SIGMA DIE - Made for about $200,000 and filmed back in 2006, I didn't think this would EVER come out. Stars Reggie Bannister (PHANTASM [all]), Brinke Stevens (HYBRID), and Joe Estevez (DARK UNIVERSE).

THE SISTERS FOUR - Richard is just about sick up and fed with his fiance, Traci and her re-occurring nightmares. Still, if he could only solve that problem then love would be bliss. So off he goes to investigate her past at an orphanage and finds more nightmares than he bargained for.

SMALL TOWN - Something bad is going down in a town full of midgets and dwarves. Stars Warwick Davis of LEPRECHAUN fame.

HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAY TO -
