The Shining

WHEN YOU'RE HOT YOUR HOT
According to a recently unknown blog called tatteredcoat.com, a few production houses got together to have a competition. The contest among their assistant editors, was to take a movie and cut a trailer of it that made it seem like a totally different movie.

The winner was one Robert Ryang. His latest creation? A wholley new spin on Stanley Kubrick's THE SHINING (I say Stanley Kubrick and not Stephen King because King once described the picture thusly "I felt like I tossed Kubrick a live grenade and he just threw his body on it." Also because it's not the only film version of THE SHINING. Mick Garris made one as well.). In the contest, the editor could only use actual clips and quotes from the film - not shoot any new ones. Check out the full story at Tatteredcoat.com.

Then check out the story at The New York Times.

Check out the trailer for yourself here, SHINING.

I bet you'll watch it more than once.

THE HORRORS THAT NEVER WERE
The Media lied, people died: From The Huffington Post to the New York Times to CNN - they've done it before and they'll do it again. And then they'll do it some more. A documented history of the U.S. media intentionally distorting events in order to create news, regardless of the consequences.

Media Lied, People Died.

Kakurenbo

ADULT SWIM’S HALLOWEEN TREAT – KAKURENBO: HIDE & SEEK
New York, NY - Central Park Media is proud to announce that its award-winning CG sci-fi horror anime Kakurenbo: Hide & Seek is to be broadcast on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. Kakurenbo: Hide & Seek will have its worldwide network television premiere on October 29th at midnight between episodes of Fullmetal Alchemist and Samurai Champloo.

"Kakurenbo is an amazing, frightening, beautiful animation," said Newton Grant, Business Development Director at Central Park Media. "And for Adult Swim to air this gritty, gothic story in time for Halloween, we couldn't be happier."

Kakurenbo: Hide & Seek is the first film by the new animation studio YAMATOWORKS, an independent computer graphics production house founded by Syuhei Morita, a veteran of the prolific Studio 4C (THE ANIMATRIX, Steamboy). Morita left Studio 4C to found YAMATOWORKS to create CG productions with the look and feel of traditional 2D animation. Despite Kakurenbo being YAMATOWORKS' first project, some of the biggest voice acting talent on both sides of the Pacific were attracted to it – with its cast led by Junko Takeuchi (Naruto) in Japan and Michael Sinterniklaas (ALIEN NINE, Fullmetal Alchemist) in the United States.

Screened at more than twenty of the most-prestigious film festivals around the world including the Tokyo Anime Fair, Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival, and Fantasia International Film Festival, Kakurenbo: Hide & Seek has received significant recognition and a number of awards including Best Short Film at the Fantasia International Film Festival and the Exemplary Production Award at the Tokyo Anime Fair. In addition, preview showings at Anime Expo, San Diego Comic-Con, and Otakon this past summer were standing room only.

Creepers
From Sarie Morrell
HALLOWEEN COMES EARLY

Author David Morrell has redefined the “haunted house” genre with his spine-tingling new dark-suspense thriller CREEPERS (CDS Books, September 2005; Brilliance Audio, September 2005), sure to top this year’s list of recommended Halloween reading.

CREEPERS is part horror, part thriller - combining Morrell’s talents as an award-winning writer in both genres.  His classic horror novel THE TOTEM is cited in Horror 100 Best  Novels and two of his novellas are Stoker Award winners from the Horror Writer’s Association.  Considered to be the “father of the modern-action novel”, he is the author of numerous best-selling thrillers and is co-president of the International Thriller Writers Association.

CREEPERS takes place on a cold October night, when five people gather in a run-down motel on the Jersey shore and prepare to break into the long-deserted Paragon Hotel.  The five are “creepers”, the slang term for urban explorers: city archeologists with a passion for investigating abandoned buildings and their dying secrets.   Soon after they enter the rat-infested tunnel leading to the hotel, they discover that some places are abandoned for a reason.  Danger, terror, and death await the creepers in a place ravaged by time and redolent of evil.

Hailed by reviewers as a ghost story without a ghost, CREEPERS is a terrifying and haunting novel destined to be a Halloween classic.  As a character in CREEPERS says, “Given the disastrous condition of our world, it makes a lot of sense to retreat into the past.”  But what if the past turns out to be more frightening than the present?  In stores everywhere September 2005.  Available in hardcover and audio.

ARE YOU A WRITER? THEN WRITE!
Feo Amante's Horror Home Page has always put the creator first. And by that I mean that most of our content comes from writers or their representatives who want to spread the word about their premier or latest published work. Especially directed toward newbies in the field, anyone who is published or getting published is welcome and we are the perfect vehicle for the promotion of your stories, art, film and more in the form of Horror, Thriller, Mystery, and/or Suspense.

But I often get more email than I post. Why is that? There are quite a number of people out there that I'll put under the umbrella name of Reginald Buttwort (it sounds like a J. K. Potter style of fictional name and christ but I hope it's not! I haven't read all the books so you never know).

Reginald Buttwort writes his press releases like this.

Hello, independent publisher, Banality Press, has just published my book The Vile Bile. You can use this link
http://vilebile.banalitypress.com/damn/skippy/
to purchase it. Please buy my book and help support horror.

Ahem.

No joke.

I get an awful lot of "press releases" like that.

You would think that someone who is trying to promote themselves as a writer could write something better than that. Do I even have to mention that buying such an unknown quantity only supports the author - maybe - and does nothing to support Horror? I thought I might.

Please keep this in mind when you are writing a press release: I must demonstrate my writing skill.

So get people excited about your work! Get them charged up! Because your work is a worthwhile read, right? Your work is worth people spending their money on, right? Remember, you have to believe that before I or anyone else will.

Have fun!

Twisted Branch

From Elizabeth Massie
GHOSTLY WEEKEND IN CAPE MAY NJ

Elizabeth Massie and Cortney Skinner will join Craig Shaw Gardner, Matthew Costello, and Berkley editor Ginjer Buchanan in Cape May, NJ the weekend of October 28-30 for a couple of events surrounding the publication of the first three novels in the Abbadon Inn series. Abbadon Inn is a fictional bed and breakfast with a history of tragic and mysterious events, and laden with terrible hauntings. The books are all written under the pen name "Chris Blaine." The titles so far are TWISTED BRANCH (by Elizabeth Massie), DARK WHISPERS (by Craig Shaw Gardner) and DROWNED NIGHT (by Matthew Costello).

Friday night there will be a reception entitled "A Toast to the Ghosts" at the Queen's Hotel, 601 Columbia Avenue, Cape May. The Queen's Hotel is the inn that inspired the series. The reception, which is free and open to the public, begins at 7 p.m. and will offer delicious treats and cider, short readings from each of the three authors, and presentations on the creation of the series as well as the architectural history of the inn, including a display of artifacts. The three novels will be offered for sale and there will be drawings for excellent Abbadon Inn prizes (no purchase necessary)

Saturday from noon until 2 p.m. there will be a book signing of all three novels at Atlantic Books on the Washington Mall in Cape May. Again, all three "Chris Blaines" will be present as will Ginjer Buchanan and Cortney Skinner.

We hope to see you there! It's going to be good fun!

This book will be published in January 2006 to coincide with the limited edition release of volume 2. This trade paperback edition will contain most of the text in the limited edition, minus a few sections extracted as bonuses for the limited edition hardcover.

"Woe to you oh earth and sea, for the Devil send the Beast with wrath because he knows that time is short…"

But when the Beast couldn’t get the job done, the Devil sent his other son. Some call him Brian Keene. Others call him bastard. You call him…Saten. SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL is a funny, poignant and deeply personal portrait of one of the hottest new authors in the business.

NOLA considers itself a: "celebration of independent publishing featuring small presses, zinesters, book artists, anarchists, rabblerousers, weirdos, and more!"

This annual event, to be held Saturday, October 29, will be much smaller than past fairs, but a few die hard publishers have not backed down from sponsoring the event. They are (so far)

I MADE A GOD OUT OF BLOOD - OR AT LEAST A PRIEST

Horror writer, Doug Clegg (THE INFINITE, NECROMANCER), put out the word that, in its first week of release, his new novel THE PRIEST OF BLOOD will go into its third printing! In fact his publisher, Ace Penguin, sent him word only 3 days after the book hit the shelves! For fans who've believed in Doug all these years, the news is very good. Everyone is hoping that this book will be Doug's big break.

And if that happens you know what that means: Pajama parties for everyone!

Nightwatch

ROOSKIE HORROR
It was the one unseen talk-about at this year's ComicCon. A bunch of somebody's out of Russia created a Horror movie called NIGHTWATCH NOCHNOI DOZOR (UK website) and it was made to be a trilogy. Against all marketing form, they've been showing the creation everywhere except America. You can listen to Hollywood tell you how much the world hates America, but most of the world really hates Hollywood. NIGHTWATCH NOCHNOI DOZOR (US website), at least in their marketing, is a total rejection of Hollywood and their ability to "get it".

Apparently the folks who created NIGHTWATCH NOCHNOI DOZOR thought they had something too hot to allow some high placed studio exec from a temp agency relegate NIGHTWATCH to direct to video status. So the method of the moment is to generate so much enthusiasm overseas that the U.S. market will be begging to release it, or at least remake it vis-a-vis, THE RING.

It remains to be seen whether or not NIGHTWATCH will be as cool and unheralded as EQUILIBRIUM, or as dissapointing as CASSHERN. We'll soon see. Because 20th Century Fox nabbed the distribution rights, and despite rave reviews from no less than Quentin Tarantino, has relegated the film to their "Fox Searchlight" status, which means it will likely be on your video shelves instead of hitting theaters.

Go here for the trailer.

*FeoNote for the purists: This title could have gone to Jamie Lee Curtis for HALLOWEEN in 1978 - but despite her gunplay on Michael Meyers (and his subsequent immolation and beheading to name a few) he never dies! Throughout the sequels, Curtis' character of Laurie Strode remains a victim of her antagonist while Weaver's Ripley destroys all who threaten her.

BE AN ALTERNATE IDENTITY!

This time out we've got 2 contests running.

Contest #1 - The Nightjack/Headstone City Contest - BE AN ALTERNATE IDENTITY!

My new novel NIGHTJACK deals with a group of misfits who all suffer from multiple personality disorder. Here's the story: Pace is one of a group of four men who each suffer from MPD, experiencing complex delusions, hallucinations, and sometimes fantastical identities. The four go into hiding in the city, trying to piece together what happened when apparently one of their alternate personalities went on a killing spree at the hospital where they were patients.

For unknown reasons, Pace is able to access others' delusions–when alternate personalities take over members of the group, Pace alone is able to see and experience the intense hallucinations and detailed back-stories of each persona. Including Princess Eirrin, ten thousand year old sorceress and heir to the Atlantean throne; the Red Dreamer, an autistic child and sage; Smoker, a half-breed gunman from 1880s Arizona; Thaddeus, friend and companion to St. Paul, spreading the word of Christ across a troubled new world; Mei Lau, concubine to a Manchu Emperor, who's spent a decade in slavery for the moment when she may set a nation free.

Anyone who pre-orders a copy of my next paperback novel HEADSTONE CITY (due out from Bantam in February) from either Shocklines or Clarkesworld Books will automatically be entered into the BE AN ALTERNATE IDENTITY contest.

Who knows what kind of character you'll be (I sure don't, I'm still writing the book). Will you be a saint or killer? Poet or hitman? Hero or betrayer? Human or alien sloth?

Here's your chance to find out!
Ends Halloween at midnight

FeoNote: You should enter, though I sure as hell won't. My real first name is Ed, and whoever heard of being threatened by an Alien Sloth named Ed? No one could take that varmint seriously!

But wait, there is also contest #2! And just what is contest 2? Well, according to Tom, Contest #2 is exclusively for members of his newsletter. Ha! Ha! See how you've gone and screwed yourself by not being a fine upstanding member of Tom Piccirilli's newsletter? Perhaps you should look into getting that taken care of right now. I'll help speed you on your way.

From Brian Freeman
DEVELOPMENT HELL!

Cemetery Dance Publications is proud to announce the first-ever novel from Mick Garris, acclaimed director of DESPERATION, RIDING THE BULLET, THE SHINING, THE STAND, and many others!

Mick has been talking about his upcoming novel for some time. Back in April he spoke to Fangoria about it. And just what is it about? Why ...

Hollywood, California: the Bermuda Triangle of art, sex, and commerce. The beautiful people make their daily deals with the devil on the sun-dappled patio at the Ivy, not in a fiery underground cavern. Nobodies become somebodies in the blink of an eye, but the flash of heady success can be fleeting. The rocket that shoots you into the atmosphere can be carrying weapons of mass destruction that can send you just as quickly and efficiently to Hell.

And back to Heaven again.

DEVELOPMENT HELL is a wicked Hollywood satire, disguised as an extreme erotic horror novel. It is told knowingly from an inside perspective, tracking the career trajectory of a young film school hotshot into the annals of the Big Studio.

This arrogant young director leads us through his own set of unique experiences, starting with his explosive and disastrous first Hollywood movie; his discovery of a mutant baby in the arms of a Mexican news dealer in downtown Los Angeles that will be his ticket back to the top of the heap;
into the arms of a re-animated glamorous star who died in the 1930s; and body-hopping through the most glamorous sheaths of human flesh on the planet.

It is a side of Hollywood rarely seen from beneath its unvarnished, Botox-free, crinkling, wrinkling flesh, and features a supporting cast of characters you will surely recognize.

DEVELOPMENT HELL welcomes you into a behind-the-scenes peek unlike any other you have witnessed before.

(FeoNote: And featuring a cast of reviewers YOU would DIE for!)

"Mick Garris writes like a combination of Robert Bloch and James Ellroy, hardboiled noir with a ghastly little prink of the devil's own pitchfork."
- Stephen King

"You want to see Hollywood's dark side? Read Mick Garris' Development Hell. Garris has earned the right to tell this story from years of working in the creative salt mines of Tinsel Town. He finally gets to show us the way it looks from the inside, and it isn't pretty. This is a sharp, funny and chilling book; an unflinching report from the ego-haunted wasteland behind the face lifts and million-dollar smiles."
- Clive Barker

"Mick Garris, the nicest and least offensive of men, exhibits none of those finer tendencies in Development Hell: The Nine Lives of a Hollywood Player. In the studio-speak of movie executives taking a meeting, it would be described as 'The Twilight Zone meets David Lynch on steroids,' but that would be selling it short. It's a wildly original, vicious, and twisted gut-punch of a book that makes my worst day in Hollywood look like a pleasant trip to Disneyland. Garris claws at the walls of the film biz as if it were a padded cell and he himself a howling lunatic who's missed his medication. I love it."
- Frank Darabont, Director of THE GREEN MILE and The Shawshank Redemption

It's probably not that surprising that the cover art is done by Stephen King favorite, Bernie Wrightson.

Ochos Vampiros

From Market Wire
ILLEGAL MEXICAN VAMPIRES PREPARES FOR ITS FIRST HALLOWEEN

PITTSBURGH, PA - OCHO VAMPIROS, the game based on an urban myth of "illegal" Mexican vampires, debuted last November and established a reputation as a trendy party game for teens and young professionals. For this game, usually described as "a cross between blackjack and dominoes ... with vampires," Halloween 2005 will mark a first:

"Last year our goal was to debut before Christmas," says Mike Blevins, game designer. "We made that goal, but missed Halloween." Because the game is especially popular with fans of vampire legends and urban myths, the team behind OCHO VAMPIROS is going all-out this Halloween. "We're treating it like a Harry Potter release for vampire fans," explains Blevins. The company is distributing "How-To-Invite-The-Undead-To-Your-Halloween-Party" instructions, debuting new OCHO VAMPIROS products and presenting valuable coupons to thank their customers. Additionally, a dozen new Ocho Vampiros "City Sites," including MiamiVampire.com, NYCvampire.com and LondonVampire.com are now officially open. These are useful sites for strategy-game lovers or anyone who wants to throw a creepy Halloween Party. Due to a resurgence in the popularity of traditional and folk games, October '05 is expected to shatter the December '04 sales record for individual decks of the OCHO VAMPIROS card game.

In July '05, the "Minute Men controversy" prompted the game distributors to gradually replace the Ocho Vampiros slogan "Game of Illegals," with a less controversial slogan, "The Card Game with Fangs." Blevins says, "Most fans still call it 'The Game of Illegals,' so changing a slogan in order not to fall into the footprint of politics can be a gingerly paced journey." OchoVampiros.com or ColdHarborAZ.com

The OCHO VAMPIROS card game is trademarked by Cold Harbor AZ Gallery, an art gallery and traditional game developer located near Pittsburgh, PA. Cold Harbor AZ Gallery's phenomenal growth over the last year is attributed to a strong presence on the Web, unique advertising, and a resurgence in popularity of traditional card games.

HOW MANY AMERICANS DID THE MEDIA KILL?
Sometimes a question is also an accusation, and this one, by the Washington Post is pretty damn inflammatory. Did unsubstantiated reports of murder, rape, and even cannabalism slow down rescue efforts? Washington Post reporters, Robert E. Pierre and Ann Gerhart, seem to think so.

OCT. 5

From Mark West
MARK WEST - PERSONAL BEST

After years of dreams - and almost five years since I began writing it - my novel IN THE RAIN WITH THE DEAD was launched at the weekend, at FantasyCon 29 in Walsall, Birmingham.

To aid with publicity, I have set up a mini-site - from my
regular website - which is now complete and live.

As an 'on-line exclusive', there's an Afterword/essay - which follows the book from original idea right up to publication (and also lists some of the trivia and in-jokes I've put in).

In the Rain with the Dead
In addition there's:
A report on the launch (and FantasyCon 29 in general)

Pictures from the day -

A photographic tour of Gaffney -

and an opportunity to leave feedback -

This mini-site will be added to over the coming months (as signings and 'local launches' are planned), so drop by and have a look. Any feedback, as ever, is welcomed.

The book will be with the publisher by Wednesday, so if you want to buy from Amazon/Shocklines, now is the time to do it. I will be in possession of copies by the end of the week, so if you're family/local and are interested in getting hold of a novel about "lost love and gut-wrenching terror", then drop me an email!

Rex Mundi

From Arvid Nelson
JIM DI BARTOLO LEAVES REX MUNDI

To be perfectly honest, I was shaken when Jim told me. I was even thinking about moving to Dharamsala, India. No joke! But I'm convinced Jim is making the right choice. He just has to move on because he's bursting at the seams with his own creative juices. So God bless ya, Jim. I pray for your success and happiness. Issue 15, coming out next month, is Jim's last issue.

Jim was incredibly supportive and helpful - it might sound strange, but he got me through my blackest moments of despair. In fact, he was pivotal in helping me find the new artist. Yes, I have a new artist, and I'm incredibly excited to be working with him. He's already started on Issue 16, and we're right on schedule. Who is it? None other than...

JUAN FERREYRA JOINS REX MUNDI
Juan is the artist for Image's own Small Gods, which is sadly ending after Issue 12. Small Gods is a great comic, and I'm so sad to see it end. But it's giving me the opportunity to work with Juan, who might just be the perfect match for Rex Mundi. Not only that, but it's been such a pleasure getting to know him. I wish I had some more of his art to show, but for now all I can direct you towards is his front cover for Rex Mundi #16.

How spectacular is that, Dear Reader? Of all the artists I've worked with, Juan's come closest to drawing the characters of Rex Mundi the way I see them in my mind's eye. Juan's draftsmanship is impeccable, and he has a real knack for picking up on the subtleties of character. He's going to take this book to a whole new level.

Thanks to Jim for suggesting Juan, and for helping me enlist him. Jim, you are the best, your unique, quirky style is beyond compare. I am so glad to have had the chance to work with you, and I'm just as glad to have become your friend.

PROGRESS REPORT
So where does that leave Rex Mundi? In terrific shape, actually. Juan's got a proven track record with Small Gods - 12 issues in the space of about a year. That's no small feat, Dear Reader. Juan has already begun work on Issue 16, and you can still expect it to hit the stores in early January. 100% on schedule.

Land of the Dead

Tip from Scott Essman
LAND OF THE DEAD RETURNS

George Romero's latest outing with the undead didn't last long at the theaters. Did you get a chance to see it? I know I did, and in one interview after another, ol' George never said anything about the studios taking over and forcing him to make cuts (of course, I'm sure I didn't read EVERY interview). So this latest news has a twofold purpose. If you never got the chance to see LAND OF THE DEAD at theaters, or if you did but you'd just love to see George Romero's LAND OF THE DEAD: The Unrated Director's Cut, Then Get Your Panties in a Bunch! Because Universal is re-releasing LAND OF THE DEAD in theaters one last time. Just before the DVD release, LAND OF THE DEAD will hit select theaters, across the U.S., on October 17.

Check out Fangoria.com for more!

BIDDING ON MATHEW'S MILES

John "Jack" Passarella here, speaking on behalf of our family's charitable effort, Matthew's Miles. Please excuse this off-topic interruption. It is for a great cause: pediatric brain tumor research by the Children's Cancer Foundation. I want you all to know that our eBay auction has begun, a day or two later than I intended, but it's now live.

Plenty of BUFFY, ANGEL, LAURELL K HAMILTON, and other GENRE ITEMS are available. The auction items will be up for bid for 10 days. Please note that I entered these in batches so the entire lot will NOT end at the same time. Many people watch the last 10 or 15 minutes of an auction to get in last minute bids. These items are staggered. Four or five or more items will expire together rather than all at once. Also, I have some more items to add after I get confirmation from the donors, and some items may be local only, such as the autographed STING and MARTINA McBRIDE photos. Keep checking our auction page for details and updates
