QUICK BITES
From E.C.McMullen Jr.
Richard Matheson's tale, NIGHTMARE AT 20,000 FEET, has truly been the stuff of nightmares in its many incarnations from print to television to feature film. But despite its various incarnations, Barry Hoffman of Gauntlet Press is about to publish what might be the definitive version of Matheson's masterpiece.
"Our version of Nightmare... will be far different," says Hoffman.

"We have storyboards from the film, we'll be printing the scripts from both the original TZ episode and the TZ film adaptation and we have commentary from a number of those involved (Shatner, Donner). Plus, the editor, Tony Albarella, will have extensive commentary."

Video Interview: Joe Dante on The Necessity of Horror
Joe Dante was recently at Comic-Con and as for what he was promoting, I have no idea. As far as I know, he wasn't there to sell or pitch me anything. Both him and Roger Corman were in attendance this year, and amongst the hardcore geek community, it was a big deal.

TOP COW CELEBRATES ARTIFACTS' LAUNCH & SELL-OUT AT TWO RELEASE PARTIES
LOS ANGELES, Calif., July 28, 2010 – Top Cow Productions, Inc. proudly announced today that copies of Artifacts #1, have sold out at the distributor level. A second printing of Artifacts #1 is being sent to Diamond Comics Distributors to meet the demand for the publisher's 13-issue mega-event series and will be available in upcoming weeks.

Written by Ron Marz (WITCHBLADE) and featuring the art team of Michael Broussard (THE DARKNESS), Rick Basaldua (THE DARKNESS), Sal Regla (Magdalena) and Sunny Gho of IFS (Velocity), the Artifacts event series promises to be Top Cow's most ambitious art series to date and will weave together story lines from a number of Top Cow titles. The first issue kicks off with the abduction of Hope, the daughter of Sara Pezzini and Jackie Estacado and quickly spirals into a conspiracy, which threatens to destroy the entire Top Cow Universe.

Artifacts - full cover

"We have been working on Artifacts for almost two years and nothing has been more gratifying than hearing and seeing the reaction from reviewers and fans alike," commented Top Cow Publisher Filip Sablik. "Ron, Michael, Rick, Sal, Sunny, and Marc have delivered a breath-taking, show-stopping first issue and let me assure you, we are just getting warmed up."

"We've been talking about Artifacts being a chance to put our best foot forward, so to speak, in terms of introducing the entire Top Cow Universe to readers," added Marz. "So I'm absolutely thrilled with the response we've received, especially going to a second printing so quickly. I'm proud of what Michael and I and everyone else on the creative and editorial teams has produced, and I want to get it into as many hands as possible."

On Saturday, July 31st, Top Cow will co-host two bi-coastal launch parties to celebrate the release of this momentous first issue. The Los Angeles release party will be held at Collector's Paradise from 7-10pm PST. Broussard, Basaldua, and Publisher Filip Sablik will be at the event signing copies of the Collector's Paradise exclusive variant cover of Artifacts #1, as well as an exclusive limited edition print featuring art from Broussard. Collector's Paradise is located at 7131 Winnetka Ave in Canoga Park. Additional information can be found at the store's website at ComicsAndCards.net.

The New York release party will be held at Midtown Comics at Times Square from 3-5pm EST. Marz will be at the event signing copies of the Midtown Comics' exclusive variant cover of Artifacts #1. Midtown Comics is located at 200 W 40th Street (Corner of 7th Avenue) in New York. Additional information can be found at the store's website at MidtownComics.com.

Momentum for the race to Artifacts began after the publisher released an Artifacts guide as part of the Top Cow Artifacts #0 Free Comic Book Day issue. Artifacts #1 is the perfect place for faithful readers to see their loyalty pay off, and for new readers to enter the Top Cow Universe.

Artifacts #1's success joins other recent sold-out Top Cow titles – The Darkness/Pitt #1, The Darkness/Pitt #2, Tracker #1, Pilot Season: Murderer #1, Pilot Season: Demonic #1, Angelus #1, Angelus #2 and Magdalena #1.

Adam Green on Hatchet 2 - how the horror movie came to be
Adam Green is a determined genius. The creator of Dark Sky Films Hatchet and the upcoming Hatchet 2, said (in a limo on the way to Comic Con and part of this blogger's trip sponsored by The Kings Inn Hotel, San Diego) that the horror movies series, which features the murderous exploits of Victor Crowley, was in his head from childhood days, and wanted to get it into the big screen, but a series of rejections forced him to the point of writing the script from scratch in just three days.

Crosshair
From Julie Smith
MANDEVILLE AND TOPCOW SHOOT FOR CROSSHAIR
Deal Closes at Comic-Con
(Los Angeles, CA; July 28, 2010) – Mandeville Films' partners David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman announced today that Mandeville and Top Cow Productions will join forces to produce a feature film version of Top Cow's comic book "Crosshair." Mandeville learned of the project of the eve of San Diego's Comic-Con, and, after extensive negotiations, closed the deal over the weekend to adapt the comic to the big screen.

Created by Marc Silvestri, written by Jeff Katz, and illustrated by Silverstri and Allan Jefferson, "Crosshair" follows a former CIA assassin turned suburban superdad who faces his most dangerous enemy ever - himself. Justin Weller learns that he has 48 hours until a suppressed program in his brain will turn him into an unstoppable killing machine aimed at the President of the United States. Weller races against the clock to uncover and reverse the source of his trigger.

"When Top Cow showed us this story, we jumped at the chance to work on this project with them," said Hoberman. "Our companies are similarly aligned with the goal of delivering one-of-a-kind stories."

"Crosshair is a unique premise in which the main character is both the hero and the villain," said Lieberman. "This dichotomy is very unsettling, which makes it a fantastic twist for audiences."

"After working with the Mandeville guys on 'Alibi,' we knew Crosshair could not be in better hands," said Top Cow President Matt Hawkins. "When they said they wanted to turn the property into film, Marc Silvestri and I were incredibly excited."

Mandeville's partners Hoberman and Lieberman will produce. Crosshair writer Katz will co-produce for Top Cow. Executive producers are David Manpearl of Mandeville, "Crosshair" Creator Silvestri and Top Cow's Hawkins.

Top Cow lit up the comic book industry when Universal's adaptation of Top Cow's "Wanted," starring Angelina Jolie, scored $207 million in worldwide box office in 2008.

This is the second collaboration between Mandeville and Top Cow. At last year's Comic-Con, the two joined forces to develop a feature version of Top Cow's title, "Alibi."

Picture of Dorian Gray
From Daniela Sapkar
AN ICONIC GOTHIC HORROR TALE COMES TO TERRIFYING LIFE
Adapted from Wilde's 1891 Hedonistic Best-Seller "The Picture of Dorian Gray", This Lavishly-Appointed, All-Star Thriller Directed by Oliver Parker (St. Trinian's) Will Make its U.S. DVD & Blu-ray Debut This August
PORT WASHINGTON, NY – Eternity has its price in DORIAN GRAY, a new horror adaptation from National Entertainment Media based on Oscar Wilde's landmark Victorian-era thriller. The lavish genre film, starring Academy Award nominee Colin Firth (APARTMENT ZERO, TRAUMA), Ben Barnes (LOCKED IN), Golden Globe nominee Rebecca Hall (THE PRESTIGE) and Ben Chaplin (LOST SOULS) arrives in a specially loaded DVD and Blu-ray edition featuring cast and crew interviews, behind-the-scenes footage and deleted scenes.

When a strikingly handsome but naive Dorian (Barnes) arrives in Victorian London he is swept into a social whirlwind by the charismatic Lord Henry Wotton (Firth), who introduces him to the hedonistic pleasures of the city. Lord Henry's friend, society artist Basil Hallward (Chaplin) paints an exquisite portrait of Dorian to capture the full power of his youthful beauty and when it's unveiled, Dorian makes a wishful vow to give anything to stay as he is in the picture – even his soul. When his flippant pledge is fulfilled – his portrait ages while he does not – the young master descends down a path of horror, wickedness, debauchery and murder in order to hide his terrifying secret.

From director Oliver Parker, who has made a career out of directing Wilde's plays "The Importance of Being Ernest" and "An Ideal Husband," comes this stylish adaptation certain to thrill genre aficionados and literary adaptation fans alike. National Entertainment Media presents DORIAN GRAY in 16x9 widescreen (1.78:1). The DVD sports 5.1 Surround Sound and the Blu-ray edition features DTS-HD Master Audio; both have English SDH subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing. Both are packed with bonus features, including audio commentary with director Parker and screenwriter Toby Finlay, multiple behind-the-scenes featurettes including cast/crew interviews, deleted scenes and more.

Days Missing Kestus 1
From Mel Caylo
FIVE SUPERSTAR COVER ARTISTS ANNOUNCED FOR ARCHAIA AND RODDENBERRY'S 'DAYS MISSING: KESTUS'
Los Angeles, CA (July 27, 2010) – At the Archaia: Black Label panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Archaia Entertainment and Roddenberry Productions proudly announced the all-star lineup of cover artists contributing to the second volume of the critically acclaimed comic book series DAYS MISSING.

A different artist will illustrate each of the five upcoming covers of Days Missing: Kestus, which launches in September. As previously announced, Alex Ross (Kingdom Come, Astro City) will be creating the cover for issue #1. Jorge Molina (Marvel Superhero Team-Up, What If? Spiderman: House of M) will design the cover of issue #2, and Ryan Benjamin (Grifter/Midnighter, New Mutants) will lend his talents to the cover of issue #3. David Mack (Daredevil, Atomika) has signed on to draw issue #4's cover, and Dale Keown (The Darkness, Pitt), who illustrated all of the covers for Days Missing volume 1, will return to illustrate the cover to issue #5.

Days Missing Kestus 2
"Each talented cover artist brings his own perspective of The Steward and Kestus to the series, which creates a richer, deeper understanding of these multi-layered characters," said Roddenberry Productions Head of Development Trevor Roth.

Artist David Marquez (Syndrome: The Graphic Novel) will illustrate the pages of all five issues of the continuing epic, which fan-favorite and Eisner Award-nominated author Phil Hester (Firebreather, The Darkness, Green Arrow) will write.

Days Missing: Kestus continues the tale of The Steward, a mysterious being who has the ability to literally "fold" days of time, secretly removing critical days from history. At the end of the first series, hints were dropped that The Steward was not alone in his powers. The second series will focus on his relationship with a new being, Kestus, as well as more days for him to "fold."

Hester and Marquez joined Archaia's SDCC panel along with Roddenberry Productions' CEO Rod Roddenberry. Fans were treated to a limited run, complimentary preview book written by Creator Trevor Roth and drawn by David Marquez.

"Archaia and Roddenberry Productions have assembled five of the best cover artists in the industry today to lend their talents to this exciting franchise," said Archaia Editor-in-Chief Stephen Christy. "It just goes to show that Days Missing is one of the best science-fiction comics out there, and this new set of issues will not only just add to its popularity, but bring in new fans!"

Days Missing: Kestus will be published under Archaia's new Black Label line of titles, which specializes in co-developing intellectual properties with prestigious partners who are seeking to flesh out and realize their original ideas through the use of Archaia's resources.

Issue #1 of Days Missing Vol. 2: Kestus (five-issue miniseries, full color, $3.95, 32 pages, Diamond Order Code JUL10 0764) is set to debut in September wherever comic books are sold.

Future updates on the series, including preview images and other behind-the-scenes material, can be found at www.daysmissing.com.

AFTERMATH
Of the San Diego Comic Convention! What did it mean for us at feoamante.com?

UNIVERSAL DEAD, the little webseries that could, was written and produced by first-year feoamante.com alumni, Kelly Parks. It was directed and produced by my LAST CALL editor, Vernon Mortensen. I was Art Director and movie poster designer. This is how the rest of the webisphere sees it:

The biggest winners and losers of Comic Con 2010
And you'll notice that Tron Legacy isn't on the list — in its third year at SDCC, Tron Legacy maintained the high level of buzz it already had among the SDCC crowd. There's a big difference between "buzz maintenance" and generating new buzz. Ditto for a lot of other Comic Con favorites that continued to be Comic Con favorites, but didn't really gain or lose new buzz.

So with that said, here goes, in no particular order:
The buzz winners of SDCC 2010:

Salt
YOU DUG IT
Dropping only 32% in it's second week and holding onto #1, you are clearly digging INCEPTION.
This week's Thriller, SALT, had to settle for second place with a $36 million B.O. Whether or not you truly dig it remains to be seen, but was it really wise to cast Liev Schrieber in the same character type he played in PHANTOMS, THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE, X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE, and REPO MEN? For genre movie fans, Schrieber has gone to the well with this type of character a few too many times.
DESPICABLE ME made #3 in its third week after adding 99 extra screens. Having brought in nearly three times its budget, DESPICABLE ME is in the clear profit zone for when it finally exits the top ten.
You continue to dig TWILIGHT: ECLIPSE, which ran through its 4th week with a $7 million box office and a theatrical total of nearly $280 million. It dropped from #4 to #8.

YOU BURIED IT
You are clearly hating PREDATORS, which dropped from #8 in its second weekend to #10. You seem to be hating it for all of the reasons I described in my review of PREDATORS. It was a truly excellent movie gutted by an ending which snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, destroying the whole experience.

No more Horror Thriller movies until August 20. Then we'll be veiwing PIRANHA 3D, from remake Director Alexandre Aja. Aja is one of a small stable of successful Hollywood directors who only directs remakes like THE HILLS HAVE EYES [2006], MIRRORS [2008], and the untried-in-a-court-of- law-but-highly-suspected lift of the Dean Koontz' novel INTENSITY (and movie of the same name), HIGH TENSION.

HAPPY HORROR THRILLER BIRTHDAYS TO -

Actor Suzanna Leigh (THE DEADLY BEES, DEADLIER THAN THE MALE, THE LOST CONTINENT, SUBTERFUGE, LUST FOR A VAMPIRE, THE FIEND, SON OF DRACULA) is 65.
Director Peter Hyams (CAPRICORN ONE, OUTLAND, NARROW MARGIN, TIMECOP, THE RELIC, END OF DAYS, A SOUND OF THUNDER) is 67.
Look for Peter's upcoming Mystery for 2009, BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT.
