LOUISIANA UPDATE: Evening 1
(tip from Harry Shannon)
Despite the fact that New Orleans has been sinking for over a century.
Despite the fact that the city has been preparing for it since at least
1830 (the year they decided to stop burying their
dead in the ground), despite the age-old levees to keep out the
storm waters, everybody knew this flood was coming. What nobody truly
understood, however, was the dynamics of the aftermath. Except for now.
Now everybody with a microphone is cooley discussing their reasoning ability
about Louisiana, as if this disaster is somehow the fault of the citizens
there, for living there. NBC's
Pete Williams, says that FEMA's Acting Deputy Director Patrick
Rhode was asked "How
anyone could be surprised by a flood, when the levees were not built to
withstand a Category Five hurricane." What is that supposed
to mean, anyway? People in Louisiana were surprised that Katrina took
a sudden turn and headed right for New Orleans. Truth is, those old earthen
levees withstood the hurricane quite well. It is the newest section, the
high tech, state of the art section built by the Army Corps of engineers,
that was destroyed by Katrina - a Category 4 storm. Unfortunately, the
remaining levees are doing their job too well, forming a bowl around the
city.
And
you know what? All of that doesn't matter. What matters is not who is
to blame but how fast we respond to this RIGHT NOW! Point
yer f*cking fingers AFTER everybody has got to safety!
The
Associated Press also needs to stop their racist
reporting. White people who go into a grocery store and take
food were "able to find some food in a grocery store". Black
people who do the exact same thing at the exact same same
grocery store are called "looters".
President
Bush cut his vacation short and got to work on this, but where the hell
are the vacationing Senate and Representatives who control the nation's
purse strings? Contact the offices of your local representative your Senator
and demand that they cut their vacation short and return to Washington
to FIGHT THIS DISASTER! 90,000 square miles of the U.S. has been
damaged. Think about 5 hydrogen bombs hitting targets along the Mississippi.
And these politicos are ignoring this and enjoying their vacations!
Call
your Senator or Representative, tell them to get the hell off their ass,
get to Washington, and fix this thing NOW! Our citizens are dying RIGHT
NOW!

LOUISIANA UPDATE 2
(originally from a Warner Bros. email memo -Feo)
Lampton Enochs (MISERY, BEDAZZLED) is the
producer/line producer who has done all of our CNG movies in New Orleans.
He has been in touch with us over the last few days regarding the situation
in New Orleans and the safety and needs of our local crew. He is one of
the calmest, most rational people I know, not prone to feeding drama.
This
note came from him this morning - it's not an anonymous internet pass-along.
The perspective is just too real. And the action he's requesting is all-too
doable.
I
know many people have called and asked what they can do for all of us
in New Orleans. If you would, please distibute this email to everyone
you can think of. This is important. Would everyone please, please call their senators and congressmen and plead for the federal government
to take control of our city. There are people on the streets who have
not eaten in days. They are living in human waste amongst dead bodies.
Lawlessness is the rule. I have a friend who is a Doctor at Children's
Hospital. He had to drive to his house to retrieve a gun so that he and
other Doctors could guard the hospital from looters. Doctors who have
attempted to drive ailing children to Baton Rouge in their own cars were
carjacked in the parking lot. Tim has yet to see a policeman or national
guardsman. They are overwhelmed.
Another
acquaintance drove in to the city to check his house. He was immediately
carjacked and is now stuck in the city with no way to get out. There is
no way any of us can return to New Orleans to check if we have anything
left as long as the city is under seige.
I
am fortunate - I am safe and I have the wherewithal to take care of my
family. Many thousands of people are not so fortunate. I am disheartened
by the lack of response from our federal government in this crisis. If
our friends do nothing else, please help get this message out.
Thanks to all of you.

LOUISIANA UPDATE: Morning
(tip from Monica J. O'Rourke)
The flood waters are receding somewhat. A military convoy, with floodwaters
up to the axles of their vehicles, were able to get to the Superdome bringing food and water, other supplies, and busses that could take
some of the people out. So far, and counts are iffy and this may be
a low number, but 800,000 people have been evacuated so far just to
Baton Rouge. Possibly that same number to Houston, Texas. When you have
4,000,000+ people suddenly displaced and penniless, where are they all
going to go? Now add all of the other states from FLorida to Mississippi
that suffered through the storm. Florida is almost used to getting national
disaster relief after just a Category 3 storm. Katrina was a Category

Louis Maistros (THE
BIG PUNCH), hurricane survivor:
Put share this interview
with the Mayor of New Orleans with everyone you can:
cnn.com/2005/US/09/02/nagin.transcript/index.html
People in this country need to start getting ANGRY about the way the
federal government is handling this situation. I'm so pissed right now
I can hardly breathe. People are dying RIGHT NOW and it doesn't
have to be that way. Please help us make some noise, and tell everyone
you know to spread the noise as far and as quickly as possible.
So
our government is doing as much as possible - BUT not as much
as possible is being done. And the reason behind that is all
of these other states that need to mobilize their own forces and COME
TO THE AID of Louisiana. New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin said on National
Television that the "Federal government needs to get off their
ass!" And to do that, all of these vacationing Senators and Representatives
need to get off of their asses and back to Washington RIGHT
NOW!
Call
them, shame them, on your local radio station, but get them moving.
Find out what your Governor is doing to help Louisiana. How can your
Governor help? Millions of people need to be evacuated. Those millions
need to go Somewhere. It seems that 49 other states can absorb
their numbers. We need more than just moving people from one Sports
dome to the next. The
Houston Astrodome is full.
One
more thing. Groups of some well meaning people have tried to get into
New Orleans to volunteer and help with the aid. Don't. Anyone who goes
there will need their own food, water, waste facilities, a place to
put their garbage, and fuel and there just isn't enough. Nearly
90,000 square miles of infrastructure have been destroyed. Imagine a
100 mile margin around THAT area that is being used as a staging area
for qualified rescue teams. Those facilities that have gas and food
outside of the damaged areas have been, or are currently being, depleted.

THE RED CROSS
Immediately after September 11, 2001, I placed the Red
Cross link on this website. There were many organizations
that collect for various charities and new ones are often created in
emergency situations. The thing is, I can never be sure which ones are
real and which ones are scumbag. But one thing I think we all notice
is that when an emergency occurs, two things happen. The Military (aka
baby killers to some) goes in to rescue people, and the International
Red Cross is right behind them. I can't think of a single
charitable entity that ever beats the Red
Cross in times of disaster and threat to human life. Since
9/11, the Red
Cross link has come down, and returned, and come down, in
response to various world wide emergencies. I was concerned that, leaving
the link up too long might make repeat visitors ignore it. I'm finally
starting to appreciate the fact that I should leave it up permanently,
since I can never know when and where and to what extent another disaster
will happen. I do know that Red
Cross efforts go on 24/7, 365 days a year around the world.
I'm
not asking you to donate every time - or any time - you come here. I'm
simply asking that every time you visit us and enjoy the site, you give
attention to the Red
Cross link beneath our red skull. Just notice it, never forget
it. It means life.

LOUISIANA UPDATE: Morning
Okay folks, a quick word here. I don't care about the Kanye Wests, The
Randall Robertsons, The Robert Kennedys, the Jesse Jacksons, and all
of the other barefaced liars who are using this moment to grab themselves
some attention and sew dissension. While these people are out trying
to make a controversial name for themselves, they are doing absolutely
nothing to help at this moment and everything to be the parasites they
are. They sewn from the same fabric as Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell.
I'm not posting their comments. I'm not posting their links, and I don't
need any more information about them or people of their sick ilk in
my mailbox.
By
all means, please send me information on what is actually going on.
The good, the bad, but no more posturing outsiders trying to stir trouble
and hate to direct "controversial" attention to their own
egos while the rest of us are trying to do something, anything, to help
this situation.
I
appreciate the emails, but these are now my guidelines. Thanks.
Oh
and FYI: There is no cannibalism going on in New Orleans - unless
its some as-yet-undiscovered deranged nut who was a cannibal anyway
- But the story, not reported anywhere but only spread as blog rumor (not surprisingly, where all enraged crackpots and nutjobs go, the Huffington Post),
is a barefaced lie meant to make the citizens of New Orleans look like
barbaric animals.

SOMETHING TO LIGHTEN THE MOOD
Actor Sean Penn, known for going to various hotspots to get his mug
in the news as a "world-conscientious-caring" actor, made
the news recently when he and his "peeps" made a heavy junket trip to New Orleans for a heroic photo-op.
His excuse was "Whatever
I can do to help." The reality was, a boat stuffed with
his entourage, including his personal photographer. Ahem, his boat started
sinking. Sean was photographed using a drink cup to bail out the water.

HISTORICAL HORROR LITERATURE VALUE OF LOUISIANA: Part 2
The wondrous people of New Orleans are the residents of the greatest
cosmopolitan city in the U.S.A. Everybody knows there is an incredible
wealth of culture and history and here.
New
Orleans has been a home or visiting place for: Walt Whitman, Mark Twain,
Washington Irving, James Fenimore Cooper, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ferdinand
Lementhe (aka Jelly Roll Morton, who was born
in the Ninth Ward), Tony Jackson in Storyville, Louis Armstrong,
Buddy Bolden, numerous other Jazz Musicians like Bunk Johnson, etc,
Herman Melville, Thoreau, Emerson, F Scott Fitzgerald, Malcolm Lowry
and his wife were thrown out of a bar on St. Ann while rewriting UNDER
THE VOLCANO in the bar, William Faulkner (He had
an apartment here that is now a bookstore, in the French Quarter near
the Cathedral), Tennessee Williams (he
had at least five apartments in the Quarter), Truman Capote who
as a child lived in the Monteleone Hotel in the Quarter, John Kennedy
Toole taught Composition at UNO, James Branch Cabell, Lafcadio Hearn
was a newspaperman for the Times Picayune, Walker Percy, Oscar Wilde,
Sherwood Anderson, Nelson Algren, William S. Burroughs lived in Algiers
on the West Bank of the city who was visited by Kerouac in ON THE ROAD
and scored his smack on the same street where Oswald gave out fliers
and Faulkner shot old genteel ladies in the ass with his lawyer friend's
bb-gun from another apartment window, Aldous Huxley stayed with Anita
Loos in her apt by Jackson Square.
Baton

LOUISIANA UPDATE 3
The band, Tragically Hip sung about it years ago in their minor hit,
New Orleans Is Sinking. Popular Mechanics, in an irony of national tragedies,
published an article called, NEW
ORLEANS IS SINKING back on September 11, 2001. They stopped
burying their dead in the ground back in 1830. In 2003 the Army Corps
of Engineers published a plan to build levees to
protect New Orleans, which has been living on borrowed
time for nearly 20 years. The plan would have taken another
30 years to complete. The reason for the flood right now is because
the newest part of the levee, broke. The old earthen ones stood. The
new levee broke! And so what? It's nobody's fault, it's everyone's fault.
Nobody is that lucky for that long? Fine. Whatever. Right now our fellow
citizens desperately need our help. That's what matters. Right now.

Mechanics wrote a chillingly predictive article in 2001. |
Try not to
travel this weekend. Please cut down on your driving. Use less fuel if
you can so that the rescue busses, which are trying to find their way

fingers at each other and talking - instead of doing something Right

After 9/11, I asked that any of my visitors who are unemployed to go to
their local Red Cross to volunteer their services. Even if you have no
rescue experience, your ability to do simple office work at your local
Red Cross could free up a person with more experience to run to the disaster.
Even keeping the infrastructure going is vital right now. When you hear

Anne
Rice has her say about her old home, New Orleans, at NYT.
Folks
from Mississippi want the country to know that they are in just as dire straits as New
Orleans, Louisiana, except nobody is giving them the help that they need.
Massive warehouses have been opened in both states to house
their dead. Our heroic media forces can only cover so much,
and they are currently involved with Louisiana and specifically New Orleans.
I wish I had more to tell you about what's going on in Mississippi,
but there is almost no media coverage.
What
links I have found I'm getting from local media sources (local
to the actual news). Refugees are pouring in from the following
states, following the damage by Katrina: Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana,
and Mississippi.
(SEPT. 7)
From Mike
F. Korn
HISTORICAL HORROR LITERATURE VALUE OF LOUISIANA: Part 3
The tragedy is beyond describing. The horror cannot be put into words.
Many, many people in New
Orleans had no
help for up to four days (FEMA)
or more. Here
is what is going on here from what I know. While finger-pointing goes
on, this is what Louisianians are doing. I've got the political acumen
of Ed Gein and I don't know much except that Twain had a home here for
a while and probably had a drink here and that there are still absinthe
bars in the French Quarter (non-working siphons)
so I am rather a dullard, but this is what I know.
I personally know from being a peon programmer for the state, that the
State of Louisiana has a $62 million dollar grant plus tons of other large
grants to help our folks, along with all the outside money and damage
money.
New
Orleans is about to get back its tap water.
Gas is being distributed.
People are being allowed to go back to check their homes, like in Jefferson
Parish.
Rescue crews are trying to get everyone out and save anyone left.
There are people rescuing hundreds of New Orleans pets and reuniting them
with their owners.
Pharmacies are working backbreaking hours.
The Labor agency here is working hard to take as many claims as possible.
Anyone can get at least a one time food stamp voucher to replace all the
food that was rotted, plus all the new food assistance for those that
have nothing now.
We are creating 10,000 jobs, fair paying jobs with fringe benefits for
those that lost everything, plus Baton Rouge is welcoming our New Orleans
children into our school systems and college students into our colleges
and are being offered in some states, free tuition and board. The traffic
is bad, but we love it. There are over 300 helicopters out there at least.
We are doing well being half Baton Rouge, half New Orleans. Every church
this state has has given tons of shelter and toys and Gatorade and baby
formula food and water and diapers and cots, the infirmed are being well
taken care of here I've heard, at LSU in our Basketball dome and many
other large places and in our hosptals. There was even a Vietnamese Baptist
church that gave food and shelter. Everybody is giving everything. I've
given what little I have. The power companies are getting the power back
in these parishes that were destroyed, they got all of Baton Rouge's power
and many other cities power back.
Back.
The
department of social services is working overtime to give money to everyone
that lost everything. The pumps are pumping again.

Lt.
Gen. Russell Honore |
The Red Cross is working overtime, serving hundreds of thousands of
meals, getting medicine, treating people. The doctors and nurses are working
to exhaustion. State troopers, sheriff deputies, policemen have come in
from every state in the country. Our General Russell "John Wayne"
Honore is the greatest hero of our time, and is working with General Landreneau.
There are tons and tons of shelters everywhere and in every parish in
the state. Everybody is volunteering, over five thousand here in Baton
Rouge, I think that is an underestimate. Dozens of retired state troopers
have volunteered to go back to work. Phone service is getting back in
these badly hit areas. And the main thing is, thousands of people had
been and continue to be rescued. Wildlife and Fisheries boats have been
rescuing people. Regular outdoorsmen brought their boats down to all those
badly hit areas. Men are putting out fires. Louisiana has thousands of
heroes here.
I'm
just a poor Louisiana peasant myself that can really mess up a gumbo,
but you've just gotten my limited knowledge of what is going on here.
I probably left out all the federal help and the National Guard and other
other state's Reserves and tons of other things, so I will just stick
to fiction writing about old Cajun Men that encounter Alien craft or something.

OBSERVING THE BIRTH OF THE "I TOLD YOU SO" SNEER
When the horrors of this disaster were just beginning to be revealed in
the International news; when the usual suspects used this as a Jerry Falwell/Pat
Robertson platform to bash Bush, bash America; bash their fellow Americans
who supported him, etc. into boring stupidity; and incite calls of racism
(oh right! No white people suffered through this.
No Indigenous people suffered through this. No Hispanics suffered through
this: Unless, of course, you also count Mississippi, Georgia, Florida,
and Alabama, which all have their own Horror stories! But that would be
reality, and why have reality when you can hypocritically cherry pick
your facts to match your hate rhetoric?): Meanwhile the usual suspect
celebrities used the moment to rush to the area with their hairdressers,
make-up artists, personal assistants, photographers, videographers, friends,
hanger-ons, etc., under the guise of "trying to help"; there
was this underlying sneer of "But they knew it was coming."
As if, because one day a hurricane would destroy the sinking New Orleans,
it was the fault of the people who lived there, if they also died there.
Now on blogs and news reports, that suppressed "Smarter than thou"
sneer is becoming more vocal. So
bearing this in mind, let's consider the following things we know on a
geographical scale.
The
west coast of California from San
Francisco to San Diego and all points in between those cities:
They all know that the big earthquake is coming and when it does it will likely kill millions, plus all the
damage that will be done by the stupidity of having a nuclear power plant
built IN the San
Andreas Fault AND on the very edge of an eroding cliff:
the annual costs to keep it from falling into the Pacific are enormous.
Southern California: People and animals killed. Homes and forest destroyed by the tens of thousands of acres - EVERY SINGLE YEAR. Most of it is preventable except the environmental groups in the area stand in the way of fire prevention.
Seattle:
That city is going to get it but big when Mount
Rainier goes boom, and it WILL go boom.
The
entire chain of mountains of which Mount Saint Helen's is but a fraction
of: That whole area will be destroyed on a major scale as the Cascade
Mountains are rising even as we speak.
Everything
in the US that is east of Yosemite, according to one theoretical scenario.
And,
of course, the entire South eastern seaboard by the very next Hurricane.
And
where do you live?

More Horror stories coming out of New Orleans. According to ABCNews.com,

at a time when those very same National Guard soldiers needed to be saving
lives (the helicopter, in fact, actually had four

KATRINA HORROR: AFTERMATH 1
The latest news that's coming out of the media mire of Katrina is something
that seems to be old news to the survivors from New Orleans. And that
is, Katrina didn't flood New Orleans and the levees didn't break. The
flood came when they opened the floodgates to relieve the pressure on
the new levy built by the Army Corps of Engineers. I've never linked to
Rush Limbaugh's site as far as I can remember. There was never any reason
to and this is a horror site, not an agenda driven political blog. But
as was pointed out to me recently, I've linked to sites like the Huffington
Post, the Democratic
Underground, and even Moveon.org.
So
in the interests of equal time, and strictly because what Rush had to
report is directly involved with the people of New Orleans in particular
and the Hurricane victims in general (and I'm counting
the lives lost in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi as well as
Louisiana), a piece on how ABC News was surprised by the response
of real people from New Orleans (as opposed to columnists
in far away major cities trying to "feel their pain")
and their reaction to the situation.

Sometimes a question is also an accusation, and this one, by the Washington Post is pretty damn inflammatory. Did unsubstantiated reports of murder, rape, and even cannabalism slow down rescue efforts? Washington Post reporters, Robert E. Pierre and Ann Gerhart, seem to think so.
