NOVEMBER SHADOWS LEADS TO DECEMBER'S DARK TREATS
AUSTIN CITY HAS NO LIMITS! Not to let the happenings of a rich November pass away without note... While Mojo-Texas writer Joe R. Lansdale was officially in Austin, Texas, the weekend of November 15-20 for the Texas Book Festival, he allowed friend (and co-editor of WEIRD BUSINESS) Rick Klaw to drag him along to the Austin Hilton North for the goings-on of the 23rd ArmadillioCon. Besides visiting with old friends Scott Cupp, Neal Barrett, Jr., Bill Crider, and others, Lansdale also managed to get sucked into serving on a panel. HISOWNSELF may have been in town to sign his newest Hap & Leonard novel, CAPTAINS OUTRAGEOUS, but he also put in plugs for his upcoming novels, FOR A FEW STORIES MORE (Subterranean Press) and the two new ones he's writing for his new publisher, Alfred E. Knopf.

And speaking of plugging... Brian A. Hopkins did a bit of his own while in the Lone Star State when he attended ArmadilloCon. November saw the release of two collections from the two-time Bram Stoker winner: SALT WATER TEARS from Dark Regions Press and THESE I KNOW BY HEART from VOX13. SWT is a gathering of water-themed stories that includes two previously unpublished stories: "North" and "Sand King." HEART offers some of the strongest stories Hopkins has written including "The Woodshed" and "Out the Back Door," and appearing for the first time together, two from his Watcher series: "Ten Days in July" and the 1999 Stoker winner "Five Days in April." (Hopkins's novel THE LICKING VALLEY COONHUNTERS CLUB was the Stoker recipient this year for First Novel.)

Joe R. Lansdale in the clench with our own Judi Rohrig

(Personal note: This reporter enjoyed the extra treat of having lunch with Joe, Rick, and Brian A. Hopkins before either event began. It was the first meeting for Lansdale and Hopkins who tied for Stoker honors in the 1999 Long Fiction category for the Bram Stoker Awards.)

BLOWING OVER TO CHICAGO
The Twilight Tales Reading gang closes out the month this Monday night, November 26, celebrating their Eighth Anniversary! They'll be raffles and door prizes (The Red Lion Restaurant & Bar has a pretty big, door, too!), and lots of mingle time! It all starts at 7:30 p.m. with special guests Tourdion.

ALAS, POOR CON-CAT
I thought I'd be writing to remind everyone of the Con-Cat weekend over Thanksgiving, that nifty little convention down in the Knoxville, Tennessee area at which I was to be the Author Guest of Honor. Unfortunately, the 13th Con-Cat has apparently brought its own dose of bad luck and at the last minute the convention encountered major hotel problems that it could not resolve.

The bottom line is that today, only four days before its scheduled event dates, Con-Cat literally found itself with NO hotel and has had to cancel the entire convention. If you pre-registered or made arrangements to host a dealer's table, please contact the convention at solveig@earthlink.net for a refund. They plan to reorganize and regroup and hold a real whiz-bang of a convention next year!

Since I have everyone's "ear," the Buffy fans out there will be interested to know that TALES OF THE SLAYER is now out, and TEMPTED CHAMPIONS is scheduled to be published in March 2002. This makes for a very busy next few months for me. I'm also still determined to finish the first draft of MIRROR ME by the end of this year (I just don't give up that easily!).

DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS!
People in the Austin, Texas, area can forget plucking that turkey for now as Thanksgiving comes early with two author events happening during the same weekend. The Sixth Annual Texas Book Festival opens Thursday, November 15, at the Texas State Capitol. Slated to attend for readings and signings are a number of authors including that man from Nacogdoches, Joe R. Lansdale, and his very good friend, Andrew Vachss. Both have new books to sign: for Lansdale, it's his latest Hap & Leonard mystery, CAPTAINS OUTRAGEOUS, while Vachss will put pen to title page on PAIN MANAGEMENT.

There's much more in store and many more authors scheduled for this event which lasts through Sunday, November 18. A complete schedule of events, authors, readings, and signings may be found at the website: austin360.com.

Meanwhile, November 16-18, finds the Fandom Association of Central Texas playing host to ArmadilloCon at the Hilton-North in Austin. Guest of Honor is J. Gregory Keyes, but the there's a well-rounded guestlist that includes Neal Barrett, Jr., Jack McDevitt, Elizabeth Moon, Michael Moorcock, Brian A. Hopkins, Bradley Denton, Rick Klaw, Michael Bracken, Bill Crider, and Judi Rohrig, among others. More information on specific panels, signings, and readings may be found at the website, fact.org.

Our reviewer/Reporter, Monica O'Rourke, sent me this photo of an enthusiastic fan, who was nice enough to display her affection for this site in a manner that would be best appreciated and get the most attention.

It is always nice to get photos like this from the fans, although this is first that I've been able to show on this site. The others don't quite fit feoamante.com's - "agenda" - and so must remain in my . . . ahem, "private" collection.

P.S.: And no, this isn't a shot of Monica's butt. And don't ask me "How I know".

You never know when or where the photos are going to come from here at feoamante.com. This one comes from the 2001 NeCon and is from Monica J. O'Rourke who says:

At the talent show, they had just (jokingly) announced that Dallas had cost Phil Nutman first place by doing a shitty job announcing the act.

So Shirley Bassey (aka Phil Nutman), who had sung Diamonds are Forever, came up to show his dissatisfaction with Dallas. I was sitting beside Gordon Linzner, with Dallas on the outside of the row. I wish I could have gotten a clearer shot, but I was sitting at a poor angle. Funny picture though.
