I AM LEGEND: APOCALYPSE NOW IN MANHATTAN
By Alain Bielik
Ever since its publication in 1954, I Am Legend by Richard Matheson has remained one of the most revered works of science-fiction literature. A unique combination of tense action and philosophical reflections, the book tells the gripping story of Robert Neville, a man who escaped a worldwide pandemic that turned the whole humanity into nightly, blood sucking creatures. Neville has become the one and only human being on Earth, the last of its kind: a true legend for the new species that has emerged on the planet.

WILL SMITH FILM 'I AM LEGEND' NOT HITTING CHINA AMID U.S. MOVIE BAN REPORT
Friday, December 07, 2007
HONG KONG - Will Smith's new sci-fi thriller, "I Am Legend," is hitting movie theaters across Asia later this month - but not in China.
The delay in the film's approval comes amid a report that China has issued a temporary ban on American movies to boost the country's domestic film industry - a move the country's regulator has denied.
"We struggled very, very hard to try to get it to work out, but there are only a certain amount of foreign films that are allowed in," Smith told reporters in Hong Kong on Friday.

I AM LEGEND FILMS ZOMBIES IN NEW YORK
by Ian Caddell
LOS ANGELES–The creation of a movie about the only man to survive a virus that kills millions, including the entire population of New York City, would be difficult enough if you were shooting it in a studio and using a green screen to create the look of a city in ruins. That degree of difficulty would increase greatly if you decided to shoot it on location in Manhattan. And if it was only your second film, the odds against it being fun would probably be too high to bother calculating.

Why This Movie May Be Good:
1. Actor: Will Smith has a pretty good track record so far and is known to turn crap into gold (INDEPENDENCE DAY). Who would care about ID4 if it wasn't for Will?
2. Writer Mark Protosevich had a cool win with THE CELL and the remake of POSIEDON was a far better film than the original, even if it was marketed (Hey! We've improved the special effects of the old one!) rather poorly.
Why This Movie May Be Bad:
1. Director Francis Lawrence tanked with awful direction and a schlock of heavy handed special effects in his previous (and first) feature film, CONSTANTINE. Then again, that may be the fault of ...
2. Co-writer/Producer Akiva Goldsman, who has worked as co-writer on BATMAN FOREVER, PRACTICAL MAGIC, I,ROBOT, and THE DA VINCI CODE and alone penned SILENT FALL, BATMAN AND ROBIN (10 Razzie Nominations and one win), and LOST IN SPACE (1999 Razzie Nominee). So Akiva has only had hits when people were helping him write the screenplay. Worse is his list of movies that he produced. And when he both writes and produces, the movies go right into the toilet like LOST IN SPACE, DEEP BLUE SEA, and CONSTANTINE. Akiva is both co-writer and producer on I AM LEGEND.
Now anyone is permitted the occasional klunker or two: It just happens. But to have a consistent unbroken 10 year record of stinkers is something else. Akiva's long track record of klunkers amply demonstrates that he has absolutely no connection with the audience he attempts to target: Science Fiction / Horror Thriller fans. This movie really depends on actor Will Smith and writer Mark Protosevich.
Will Smith is at his most frenetic and fun when he's riffing off of his co-stars, but I AM LEGEND is essentially a one man show. They gave him a dog to talk to which is, I guess, slightly better than a Wilson.

How did Director Francis Lawrence feel about the "Dark Seekers"?
"It was better than doing the live versions at that time, because it didn't work, but we needed six more months on the post end to get all the visual effects right. Because there were some close-ups that were stunning, and then you get some shots that I never got right, and it just fucking blows it. It just kills it. And it's just, like, one of the big downfalls for me, with that movie, personally, was with the visual effects."
