TOP COW AT BALTIMORE COMIC-CON
Publisher returns to the Charm City with special guests, exclusive comics and great giveaways LOS ANGELES, Calif., September 3, 2008 – Top Cow Productions Inc. announced today it will be exhibiting at the 2008 Baltimore Comic-Con, a comics and pop culture extravaganza to be held at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, Maryland from September 27 – 28. Top Cow will host scorching-hot, rising star Kenneth Rocafort (MADAME MIRAGE), who will attend to mark the debut of CYBLADE #1, for which he has provided a variant cover. CYBLADE #1 by Joshua Hale Fialkov (Pilot Season: ALIBI) and Rick Mays (New Avengers) marks the launch of a solo series based on the young, psionic blade-wielding member of Cyberforce and follows her adventures before joining the team. The series is a result of a fan-voted poll in Top Cow’s 2007 Pilot Season initiative, in which readers voted on which one-shot they’d like to see made into its own series.
Rocafort will also be on hand to sign copies of the Madame Mirage Vol. 1 trade paperback, which is available for the first time in September and collects all six issues that he and writer Paul Dini (DETECTIVE COMICS) worked on. Madame Mirage is the tale of a gorgeous, tech-savvy femme fatale who targets an underground organization of super-villains for termination, but as the title suggests, all is not what it seems. Rocafort also penciled one of 2008’s Pilot Season books, THE CORE, and will work on an as-yet-unannounced project for Marvel Comics.
An exclusive Baltimore Comic-Con cover for BROKEN TRINITY #2 by Top Cow founder and superstar artist Marc Silvestri will also be available at the show. Broken Trinity is a three-part mini-series with three tie-in books in which at least one established character dies and new characters are introduced to the Top Cow Universe with permanent ramifications.
Top Cow will also present a panel on Saturday afternoon (check schedule at the show for time and location), where attendees can hear some exciting announcements about upcoming publishing plans, including new projects from top creators. Top Cow Publisher Filip Sablik, VP Editorial Rob Levin, Ron Marz, Lee Moder and Kenneth Rocafort will sit on the panel for the presentation and will also be available to answer any questions.
At the Top Cow booth, Sablik and Levin will be conducting portfolio reviews and accepting leave-behind samples of artwork from individuals who are interested in entering Top Cow’s 2008 Talent Search, in which two talented up-and-comers will be invited to study under Marc Silvestri in the publisher’s Los Angeles-based studio. See the schedule at the booth for designated times.
As a bonus, there will be free preview books, prizes and other giveaways available at the Top Cow booth at Baltimore Comic-Con, so fans should be sure to stop by when they attend the show. Tickets for the event are available at BaltimoreComicCon.com. |

JULY 24
COMIC-CON - DAY 3
Last year, BOOM! Studios were the ones to beat with their truly Horrifying comic book, FALL OF CTHULHU. Written by Michael Alan Nelson and drawn by Jean Dzialowski, it truly captured the Lovecraft mythos and modernized it.
This year, I spoke to Carly Wagner, the Director of Publishing, who hinted about what to expect in the upcoming months (after the contracts have been signed, gifts exchanged, sacrifices made), and I'll be sharing more news of this Lovecraftian comic as well as their other Horror Thriller titles.
While I'm on the subject of Lovecraft, I also spoke to Mac Carter, Adam Byrne, and Tony Salmons about their title, THE STRANGE ADVENTURES OF H.P. LOVECRAFT. This title casts Howard as the reluctant adventurer, trying to break out of his shell while the world falls apart. Things are going to get very bad for Howard. Find out more at LovecraftComic.
AWAKENING didn't premier until after last year's con was over, so 2008 is when this Archaia Studios Press title really premiered. Park Falls is a tough town, but its also a small town, and the recent spate of murders and disappearances are too much for the population to bear. Some people think they know what's going on. Some people shout it to the empty streets. But the citizens of Park Falls hide in their houses, cleave to their work like robots: too terrified to even rise up in an angry mob.
Then there is the moment when a comic becomes a movie.
From pcb Productions comes the Science Fiction action Thriller, INFEX. A scientist who works for the major pharmaceutical company, INGEN-BIO, is also a father, and his young daughter is dying of cancer. He gives Ivy a series of treatments with an experimental drug that cures her cancer. Then, inexplicably, it cures all of her other ills. But the serum won't stop. It keeps making her better until she is unwittingly transformed into a human weapon. Now Ivy must escape from the pharma company, INGEN-BIO, that created her. Because INGEN-BIO creates more than just pharmaceuticals, they create bio-warfare. Check out INFEX.
Also from pcb is DEAD SPEED, which has a very simple premise. Zombies in fast cars! From the creators of Ascend, DEAD SPEED will soon be made into a motion picture starring Michael Ironside.
All three titles were created or co-created by Keith Arem. INFEX was created by Keith Arem and Brandon Humphreys.

Feo's Road Trip Tips
I've
been told that the following are really just common sense rules,
but they aren't really. Common Sense applies to things we do every
day, things that are "common" to us, and very few people
do road trips.
Road
trips are often done on the spur of the moment and even the ones
that are planned out, are often made without carefully considering
all the factors. Why? Because these factors have not been faced
before. The dynamics of a road trip - with other people in the
vehicle - often run counter to the "common sense" dynamics
of the home or workplace. Even prison cells offer more room than
you are likely to find in a car or recreational vehicle.
These
following tips, based on my years of experience as a road tripper,
are meant to ease your stress, whether you are a first timer or
an annual traveler. Anyone who remembers the awful annual roadtrips
with your parents (and the same arguments that flared up every
single time) knows what I'm talking about.
ROAD
TRIP TIPS
1.
When you are a passenger, never complain about the driving
/ traffic / trip.
2. Plan ahead for bathroom breaks:
a: Try to schedule your bathroom breaks around fuel stops.
b: If you are going to take drinks with you, bring food
to eat while you drink so the liquid won't run right through you.
3.
Plan your next gas stop when the meter gets down to a quarter
tank. When at the gas station, give yourself an extra minute or
two to walk around and stretch a bit. Your body and circulation needs it!
4.
Tolerate the driver's music.
5.
If you use the map while moving, keep it down on your lap. Make
sure that you don't unfold it to the point that it interferes
with the driver's "space" or their visibility.
6.
In heavy traffic, when riding shotgun, automatically volunteer
to give a head check for traffic in other lanes. The driver can't
see through your noggin.
7.
Don't try to win arguments at any time, even if you know you are
right.
8.
If those arguments involve directions, make absolutely SURE
you are right and then point it out on the map.
9.
If you get lost anyway, laugh it off. You will still have to share
close quarters with this person for the rest of the trip. Everybody
makes mistakes and it could just as easily have been YOU in the hot
seat.
10.
When you feel too tired to drive, ask the other person to drive.
Don't worry about who has driven more. If you are both exhausted,
pull over somewhere safe and rest as soon as possible. Don't worry
about "making good time".
11.
It always needs to be said. You MUST buy the following
items before going on a roadtrip:
a: The deluxe carwash
b: The deluxe oil change and get the premium oil.
c: The deluxe coolant and radiator flush
d: The full tune-up with everything checked and all fluids
topped off. All filters replaced with new ones.
e: Have all five tires rotated, checked and balanced (yes
I said 5! You would never go on a roadtrip without a spare tire
would you?)
f: Buy 5 cans of Fix-A-Flat. The tube and nozzle kind.
You'll thank me the very first time you have to use it.
g: Unless you are bringing enough money for hotels and restaurants
along the way, bring along a good sized plastic cooler for your
food and beverages. Keep it inside a large plastic bag. Why not
double bag it? I don't care if they are top of the line Coleman
coolers (like the one I own). Coolers WILL sweat
onto your seats. Trust me on this.
And
finally, rule 12.
When packing the vehicle for a roadtrip, NEVER allow
your stuff to get in the way of ANY of the windows.
It interferes with visibility, it makes you a moving billboard
target for thieves / vandals on the road, and it may conflict
with the highway laws in some states and / or counties that you
pass through.
Follow
these basic rules and every road trip will be a comfort. Additional
things you will discover on an individual basis, but everything
I've set down will make all your problems easy to deal with and
make your whole trip an adventure instead of a downer. |
