COMICS - MOVIES - BOOKS - MUSIC

Deadliest of the SpeciesIn the beginning, 1994, there was DrCasey.com. And there were many message boards there, they were good, and they were also dedicated largely towards fans.

That same month and year, I discovered Horrornet.com, and it too, had message boards, and they too were good. The difference was, in the message boards, and later in the chatrooms, these folks were not only fans they wanted to be creators! Horror writers.

Dr. Casey was one of my inspirations for starting my own Horror site in February, 1997, at a free web hosting site called geocities.

I mused over the idea of message boards, finally deciding to specifically avoid them, as my idea was to grow a fanbase and not whittle away at what was already there. Besides which, I felt that others were doing a great job already and I should try new directions.

People at the message boards knowlegeable and posted in depth critiques and reviews of books, movies, and more. But as everyone everywhere posted, all of the sporadically interesting ones would sink back to page 2, then 6, then archival oblivion.

I grew into the idea of making Feo Amante's Horror Home Page not just my personal PR presence, but serve as a PR machine for anyone who was serious about their writing, yet could not afford marketing and public relations.

Except nobody knew me either. I was a voice in the void.

So if you don't have experience or confidence, try Chutzpah. Being mule-head stubborn in the face of adversity (which is NOT the same as confidence) seems to work. Or at least it works for me.

I put out the offer.

As I do with my own reviews, I will put the reviewer's name at the top of their review, their photo next to the name for association so they'd be recognized by publishers and editors at conventions. I never post more than one review of the same thing. Which means that reviewer - for better or worse - becomes the sole authority on the matter for that book (later movie reviews, and so on).

The response? Crickets.

I continued writing a number of book reviews, talking each one up on chatroom message boards, until others saw the value in what I was doing and joined in.

Mike Oliveri was one of the first.

As Horrornet.com began to sputter out, I was outgrowing what geocities could offer and, in 1998, moved to my own domain name, feoamante.com (at that time, all of the cool Horror dot com names had been taken, so I used my nickname).

In 1999, Mike and I finally met up in the flesh at a World Horror Convention in Atlanta, Georgia. I believe it was called the World Horror Convention 1999 and among the Guests were Richard Laymon and Master of Ceremonies, Neil Gaiman.

I believe it was here that Mike suggested reviewing Horror Thriller comic books in their own section and I thought it was a great idea. At first I named it after him, calling it MikeO. Fanboy of Fear. The Comic section would be his department and he would handle the review submissions, editing, and so on.

MIKEO. Fanboy of Fear
Mike Oliveri was the original Fanboy of Fear

Soon, however, there came a day when Mike published his first novel, which in turn won a Stoker Award, and Mike chose to dedicate his lean spare time (in addition to being a husband, father, motorcycles, and Shuri-ryu Karate) to writing fiction. At that point the Comics section was shortened to Fanboy of Fear as Mike went on to write novels and comic books.

Never-the-less, during his tenure at Feo Amante's Horror Thriller (aka Feo Amante's Horror Home Page) Mike wrote reviews of Comic books, literary books, movies, and music.

These are the 57 reviews by Mike Oliveri at Feo Amante's Horror Thriller.
